(It aint Tebow :( ;) ) Brees breaks record formerly held by the great Dan Marino of the Miami football Dolphins:

It was Brees' final pass of the game and it gave him 5,087 yards passing — with one game still to play. Marino finished with 5,084 yards for the Miami Dolphins in 1984.
As Sproles spiked the ball, Brees put his arm over his head and started walking toward midfield while the Superdome crowd went wild and his teammates chased him down.

Was an awesome moment in Saints history.

Hopefully Brees can hold on to it though, Tom Brady is 190 yards behind Brees. Assuming Brady doesn't break the record for most passing yards in a game (554), Brees will need to get 364 to guarantee he keeps the record, though I suppose a couple hundred would prolly do it.

And what happens if Brees throws a screen pass that loses 5 yards on the first play of the game and then gets hurt? No record. Maybe he won't play next week at all.

Stats are bogus anyway because of the rules changes over the years. It used to be where a defensive back could bang away at a receiver down-field, but the emphasis on making a more pass happy game has changed the league from a run first to pass first. Not saying that it is bad but records from different era's are hard to match up.

On the other hand, if he throws for a 5 yard loss and doesn't get hurt - he's poised to break the same record twice in one season!

That record is probly gone next sunday when Brady tops it, since brees wont be playing much and the patriots have to play for the top seed in the Afc.

Brady is only something like 190 yards behind brees. So if he passes for 191 yards more than brees this sunday, the record is his.

Brees likely won't play more than a half, the saints have nothing else to play for until the playoffs.

New Orleans Saints' Sean Payton's Friday press conference transcript - New Orleans Saints Football NFL News - NOLA.com
Does the possibility of Drew Brees' single-season passing yardage record come into consideration at all with playing him?

"Not really. There are a lot of statistical little things that could be achieved or not achieved in this game, but not really. I think the focus is playing our best game against a team that we feel like is playing very well and is very hot and very difficult to defend. They're a team that's gotten better and better certainly since we played them last, which seems like such a long time ago. I think our focus is really on what we need to do to play our best football game and play these guys and finish the season on the right note."

Sorry but the Saints can't play their "best" game w/o Brees and whether or nor the result of the game is relevant will depend on the 49ers game being played at the same time.

I'm sure after the Saints make it to the Superbowl at the end of the year they won't care whether or not brees holds the record.

Wrong indeed, though it's pretty remarkable that two QB's broke Marino's record this year.
