Ditto. We have two cars that are paid off. I commute by BART and walking. The cars are used for errands and leisure activities.

Considering how much of the total lifetime energy equation of a vehicle involves the manufacturing and distribution process, one of the better things one can do to reduce vehicle related energy consumption is to keep an older car in good working condition and "use it up and wear it out".

The only time I use oil and oil byproducts is when my car needs a change, I need gasoline, my door-hinges squeak, I need loosen rusty bolts, or when I buy/use anything made with or packaged in plastic.

Other than that, no fucking way man!!!
