Putin declares Russia not bound by yhe Geneva convention article that protects victims of war crimes

After being accused by critics of causing multiple civilian deaths since its involvement in the Syrian conflict and blamed for killings of civilians during its short war with Georgia in 2008, Russian President (for life) Vladimir Putin has revoked an additional protocol to the Geneva Conventions related to the investigation of war crimes against civilians and the protection of victims of international armed conflicts.

'The Additional Protocol I to the 1949 Geneva Convention was ratified by the Soviet Union's Supreme Council, or parliament, in 1989.'

By eliminating this Russian commitment to upholding the ratified Geneva Convention agreement Putin has granted himself / Russia the authority to ignore and / or commit war crimes against civilians in future conflicts.

Putin attempted to justify his action by declaring the 'international commission, set up in order to investigate war crimes against civilians, "has effectively failed to carry out its functions since 1991"', which is interesting considering, again, Russia was accused of causing multiple civilian deaths in Georgia and Syria, to include a bio/chem attack on civilians in Syria that originated from a Russian base in Syria.

Vlad went on to justify his decision by attempt to blame other states for 'acting in bad faith':

"In the current international environment, the risks of the commission's power abuse by the states, which are acting in bad faith, are increasing significantly," says the document cited by the website that documents laws proposed and passed by the Russian parliament."
