Liberals to Ban E-Cigarettes

Saturday, August 10, 2013

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg doesn’t just want to limit the use of cigarettes – but electronic cigarettes as well.

In a newly leaked draft of three tobacco-related bills soon to be voted on by the NYC City Council, the new definition of “tobacco products” under city law would be changed to include e-cigarettes and related components, parts and accessories. If the ordinances pass, the display of e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco would be banned in retail stores.

Also, while tobacco and menthol flavored e-cigarettes would still be available in retail stores, all other flavored e-cigarettes could only be sold in age-restricted “tobacco bars.” But there’s a catch. New York City prohibits the operation of “tobacco bars” that weren’t opened before December 31, 2001.

Betrayed Illusions: The Left and the Jews

August 13, 2013 By Vladimir Tismaneanu

...

The rise of Zionism contributed the radicalization of leftist anti-Semitic prejudice. Furthermore, unable to predict the Holocaust (Trotsky was the sole notable exception), the Left remained attached to its outworn dogmas. The emergence of the state of Israel created a new reality that the left chose to either ignore or distort to the point of a grotesque caricature. Instead of the traditional identification with the underdog, the radical Left has decided that Israel represents capitalism at its worst, a new form of colonialism and even racism.

Echoing previous follies, some of those who champion these stances happen to be themselves Jewish. In some respects, it is as if people refuse to learn from history. Perhaps instead of people I should say intellectuals: a species made up of individuals more often than not seduced (and eager to be seduced) by the siren songs of utopianism.

In recent years, leftist biases, stereotypes and delusions regarding Jews, Judaism, and the state of Israel have grown and proliferated. Ironically, most of those who promote and advocate such bigoted, conspiratorial views have no idea that they are merely recycling Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin’s murderous visions of a world without Jews.

WEll I certainly agree with one point here.

It certainly IS easier to be a racial-diversity-loving-liberal in a predominately AFFLUENT (and probably mostly White) community than one where there is a huge poor minority population.

Once again, I can say this with the supreme confidence of one who has experienced living in both kinds of communities.

The Soft Totalitarianism of Nudging

August 14, 2013 By Mark Tapson

...

Nudging first appeared on the scene in 2009 with a book by Richard Thaler and Harvard law professor Cass Sunstein called Nudge, on “how government and other organizations could induce people to avoid common errors.” As Brooks explains it, those errors result from the fact that “people are pretty bad at sacrificing short-term pleasure for long-term benefit. We’re bad at calculating risk. We’re mentally lazy.” We make bad decisions unless “we’re forced to put in a little more mental effort.” In other words, we all have “a little Homer Simpson in us,” says Sunstein, and once people realize that, “then there’s a lot that can be done to manipulate them” – to nudge them.

Sunstein was an official advisor to President Obama and happens to be the husband of the influential Samantha Power, who is off to the United Nations now as our new ambassador there, where she will carry out her (and her boss’) subversive agenda to surrender American sovereignty. Sunstein, who once wrote that “there is no liberty without dependency,” is the author of another book which argues that citizens’ rights exist only to the extent that they are granted by the government. Last year, he gave a lecture at Yale on the topic of nudging and has a book forthcoming in 2014 called – with apparent seriousness – Nanny Statecraft.

...

Brooks is right that it is hard to feel in such nearly subliminal instances that your liberty and personal responsibility are being diminished, much less denied, and that is precisely why nudging can be so subversively successful among those Americans who aren’t sharply conscious of government overreach.

“These days,” Brooks concludes, “we have more to fear from a tattered social fabric than from a suffocatingly tight one. Some modest paternalism might be just what we need.” Actually, what Americans need is less condescension and suffocating control from arrogant nanny-state elitists like Obama, Sunstein, and Brooks, and more freedom to exercise our individual rights and personal choices.

Liberals accuse GOP congressional candidate of masturbating at work

Alex PappasPolitical Reporter

Just because Bob Filner — accused by numerous women of sexual harassment — resigned as mayor of San Diego on Friday doesn’t mean the city doesn’t have another potential sticky wicket on its hands.

A California news outlet is reporting that Carl DeMaio, a Republican who once ran against Filner for mayor but is now running for Congress, is now being accused by his former colleagues on the city council of, well, masturbating while on the job.

Two Democratic members of the San Diego City Council were quoted on the record at VoiceofOc.org making the allegation that DeMaio often polished his family jewels in a bathroom while at work. But a spokesman for DeMaio strongly denied the allegations to The Daily Caller on Friday.

“There is no other way to respond to this than to call it what it is: a lie,” DeMaio spokesman Jason Roe told TheDC.

Reached by TheDC on Friday, a spokeswoman for then-City Council president Ben Hueso, one of the Democrats who made the allegation, did not dispute the accuracy of Hueso’s words in the VoiceofOc.org story. She declined to make any comment. The other accuser, San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald, did not return an email seeking comment.

...

DeMaio, who is openly gay, has recently received positive press with his interest in running for the congressional seat against freshman Democratic Rep. Scott Peters. Yahoo! News titled a piece on DeMaio: “How a young, gay congressional candidate could shake up the GOP.”

Liberal Hypocrisy in Iraq and Syria

August 26, 2013 By Daniel Greenfield

jk1-450x293.jpg

In a response with clear echoes to the beginnings of the Iraq War, Obama has refused Syria’s offer to open its chemical weapons sites to United Nations inspectors as coming too late to be credible.

For the worst half of a decade, liberals were either urging us to give the UN inspectors more time in Iraq or demanding to know “Where are the WMDs?” once the war had begun.

The common consensus was Syria; a fellow Baathist regime that also served as the pipeline for the majority of suicide bombers aimed at American soldiers. But that answer was met with ridicule and contempt from the questioners.

Liberals had found their killer talking point and they were not about to let it go. Not until now.

...

The anti-war party has become the war party and in a supreme irony, its cause for a new war is the familiar one of stopping a Baath Party regime from using weapons of mass destruction against civilians.

Everything old is new again and every hypocrisy rises again to become policy. In New Hampshire, Howard Dean is reportedly sniffing around his presidential prospects and in Washington, John Kerry, Chuck Hagel and Barack Obama will begin a war that they were against… before they were for it.

Cornel West Having Trouble Getting Anyone to Pay Attention to Him

September 12, 2013 By Daniel Greenfield

Cornel West, or as he insists on calling himself Dr. Cornel West, is the nation’s leading African-American leftist troll. Or as his Twitter profile calls him, “1 of America’s most provocative public intellectuals”. That’s technical jargon for well compensated troll.

And the one thing a troll hates is being ignored.

At some point the sort of people he expected to pay attention to him… stopped. It might have been his attacks on Obama, despite their common roots in the Democratic Socialists of America.

But either way, Cornel West badly miscalculated with his latest stunt of 9/11 Trutherism. Not because it produced outrage, but because it served to remind him that no one is paying attention anymore.

West addressed tens of people at what originally was billed as a “Million Muslim March” on the Washington Mall.

West followed a parade of speakers pushing conspiracy theories that the World Trade Center towers collapsed due to controlled explosions and doubting that an airplane really crashed into the Pentagon.

I’m not sure how big of a parade it was since there were reportedly only 25 people in attendance. Maybe they were all speakers.

...

Like a lot of the professional political trolls in public life, Cornel West, like Ron Paul, is innately sympathetic to 9/11 Truthers, but lacks the provocative fortitude to embrace them all the way, instead expressing interest in their theories without committing.

The old Cornel West would have jumped in with both feet. But Dr. West has lost the plot. He’s no longer provocative. Just a leftist troll no one is paying attention to anymore.

The Leftist Enablers of Hezbollah and Hamas

October 11, 2013 By Joseph Klein

Judith.jpg

“Understanding Hamas/Hezbollah as social movements that are progressive, that are on the left, that are part of a global left, is extremely important,“ proclaimed leftist Columbia University visiting professor Judith Butler, who is also an executive member of the Faculty for Israeli-Palestinian Peace in the United States and The Jenin Theatre in Palestine. Then, in a disclaimer so typical of the leftist apologists for terrorist organizations cloaked as “resistance fighters,” Professor Butler assured us that she does not favor violence.

Hezbollah and Hamas, like all terrorist organizations, are defined by the violence they regularly commit against innocent civilians. Both have called for the destruction of Israel by any means necessary. Not only do they aim rockets and arm suicide bombers to deliberately target women and children. They use their own women and children as human shields and human bombs. Indeed, they glorify the “martyrdom” of young girls.

For example, here is an excerpt from an Al-Aqsa TV (Hamas) phone interview broadcast on January 22, 2010 on Hamas TV kids’ program, Tomorrow’s Pioneers:

Host to girl on phone: “How was it for you during the [Gaza] war [2009]? Were you afraid that you would die, that you would leave this world?”

Girl: “No. I wasn’t afraid. I wished for Shahada (Martyrdom) — Shahada for Allah.”

Host: “How wonderful. Even this little girl – how old are you?”

Girl: “Ten.”

Host: “[She] is not more than ten years old, and wants to die as a Shahida (Martyr) for Allah. We all wish for this [Shahada].”

...

Downplaying the danger of groups like Hezbollah and Hamas is a recipe for disaster. Stop the deception and call them out for what they truly are – jihadists who use terrorism as their tactic of choice to realize their malignant intentions. Israel is merely the canary in the coal mine. The ultimate target is all infidels, especially those with Western secular democratic values.

PolitiFact Says Obama's Lie About Lying is a Lie

Monday evening, President Obama gave a speech to campaign organization, Organizing for Action. During his speech, he seemed to lie about his "you can keep your insurance, period" lie, suggesting the media had misreporting the pledge he had made.

“"Now, if you have or had one of these plans before the Affordable Care Act came into law and you really liked that plan, what we said was you can keep it if it hasn’t changed since the law passed"

Two days later, PolitiFact reviewed the President's statement, giving it their worst possible "pants on fire" rating.

The Left Against Zion

December 20, 2013 by Caroline Glick

In the 1960s, the American Left embraced the anti-Vietnam War movement as its cri de coeur.

In the 1970s, the Left’s foreign policy focus shifted to calling for unilateral nuclear disarmament by the US and its Western allies.

In the 1980s, supporting the Sandinista Communists’ takeover of Nicaragua became the catechism of the Left.

In the 1990s, the war on global capitalism – that is, the anti-globalization movement – captivated the passions of US Leftists from coast to coast.

In the 2000s, it was again, the anti-war movement.

This time the Left rioted and demonstrated against the war in Iraq.

And in this decade, the main foreign policy issue that galvanizes the passions and energies of the committed American Left is the movement to delegitimize Israel’s right to exist.

This week has been a big one for the anti-Israel movement. In the space of a few days, two quasi academic organizations – the American Studies Association and the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association – have launched boycotts against Israeli universities. Their boycotts follow a similar one announced in April by the Asian Studies Association.

...

Why? Because hating Israel is what Leftists do.

The Left’s crusade against the Jewish state began in earnest in late 2000. The Palestinians’ decision to reject statehood and renew their terror war against Israel ushered in the move by anti-Israel forces on the Left to take over the movement. And as they have risen, they have managed to silence and discredit previously fully accredited members of the ideological Left for the heresy of supporting Israel.

The Eternal Darkness of the Progressive Mind

January 20, 2014 by Bruce Thornton

...

Fashion in dance and dress changes and evolves, which is why these days no one dances or dresses like Tony Manero. But the progressive mind is permanently lost in its ideological darkness. It is still hostage to the left-wing catechism of American evil, a narrative already in its second century and obviously immune to historical change or logical coherence. You know how it goes: American foreign policy has always really been about advancing the capitalist interests of corporate overlords by violently appropriating the labor and resources of the Third World, no matter how much cultural or environmental destruction is wreaked. The American people are coopted into this nefarious neo-colonialism by a spurious patriotism about the “land of the free,” and ginned up threats to “our way of life.” Behind this cheerleading rhetoric, however, lies the “inordinate fear,” to quote Jimmy Carter, of alien ideologies like communism and now Islamism, which threaten the capitalist hegemony and white superiority. This “jingoism” thus plays on the racist fear of “brown people” and the need to validate white identity by contrasting it with an inferior “other.” Deeper insecurities––no doubt of a sexual nature––among lumpen Americans are likewise exploited and soothed by militaristic “propaganda” and macho fantasies in which noble white heroes slaughter evil “people of color” under the banner of justice and freedom.

Leftists have been taught by Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and Edward Said the deeper truths: that patriotism and “freedom” are just ways to con the oafish masses, racism is the cancer deep within the American psyche, and corporate profit and power are the prime movers of American foreign policy. This cartoonish melodrama is everywhere in American culture, from the movies of Oliver Stone to the obscure ruminations of university scholars.

...

Cults, however, can be dangerous. Right now a president marinated for decades in this rancid ideology of America’s foreign policy sins is ceding American influence in the Middle East to predators like Iran and Russia, leaving behind a world more violent and dangerous, and more hostile to America’s security and interests. And with his precipitate withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan, he is squandering the sacrifices and heroism of better men like the Navy Seals of Lone Survivor.

Liberal-Progressive-Socialist

11/8/2010

The lines are becoming blurred as modern socialism creates an umbrella for the left. Liberals have drifted toward socialism for decades, until, now, they support progressive causes which are only distinguished from socialism by theabsence of State ownership of the means of production. But effective State control over the means of production qualifies as a form of socialism -- State-managed socialism.

State-managed socialism is not an uncommon position among union leaders, university professors, social and political scientists, progressive politicians, the movie industry, the media and the environmental movement, just to name a few groups who've either openly or surreptitously adopted the socialist mindset.

It's becoming more acceptable to promote socialist ideas, and these ideas have infiltrated our society to the degree that they've become acceptable in disguised form, mainly because our education system has blended these ideas with classical liberal ideas, gradually morphing classical liberalism into an America-style socialism -- State-managed socialism.

Many liberals react strongly to the socialist label and claim that it's an ignorant hyperbole pushed by right-wing fear-mongers, but honest commentators like Lawrence O'Donnell rebuke this liberal denial and claim socialism proudly. Several major magazines around 2008 began claiming the death of capitalism and wondering if socialism has not found its time and place in America.

The Black Book of the American Left: Volume 2 — The Progressives

February 28, 2014 by Frontpagemag.com

In this second volume of David Horowitz’s collection of conservative writings, The Black Book of the American Left, the author sets his focus on the “progressive” worldview and its catastrophic earthly incarnations. These observations are particularly salient since a progressive now occupies the White House, and the views of this movement dominate the Democratic Party. Horowitz pays particular attention to the crucial, but largely ignored, continuity between today’s progressives and their communist antecedents. He stresses that progressives perpetually conceal their true agendas, which are rooted in a core Marxist vision. By successfully masking its ideological foundations and commitments in this manner, the Left has succeeded in preventing its opponents from accurately identifying its true, destructive objectives.

Horowitz reveals in this volume why the term “progressive” appeals to the radicals — who have mastered the tactic of hiding themselves, their movement, and its destructive, subversive aims, behind the term. Progressives think of themselves as forward-looking, while the rest of humanity lags regressively behind. They believe that their vision of what’s good for everyone else justifies their coercive means, and because they see themselves as social redeemers building a Utopia of “social justice,” they feel justified in willfully turning a blind eye toward the devastation that invariably accompanies the efforts to create the promised future.

...

“Progressive Education: Panther Style.” When members of the progressive faith do break ranks and dissent from its myths, they are immediately shunned, and often summarily cast out. “The Secret Power of the Leftist Faith” explores this ritual in the case of Christopher Hitchens, although Christopher, a double agent of sorts, was ultimately able to retain his progressive bona fides. A related essay, “Ordeal by Slander,” illustrates how the left—in this case represented by the editor of Slate, a Washington Post publication—insulates its mythologies from damaging scrutiny by labeling its critics “McCarthyites” and witch-hunters. The result of these maneuvers and the fear they induce is a hermetically sealed intellectual environment that prevents progressives from considering alternative views.3 This phenomenon is explored in “Guilt of the Son,” which tells the story of one of the children of the Rosenberg spies who embarked on a quest to prove his parents’ innocence and wound up embracing their guilt. In 2012, the film director Oliver Stone produced a ten-part television series and 750-page text titled The Untold History of the United States. Co-authored by leftist professor Peter Kuznick, this so-called history regurgitated the Stalinist version of the Cold War’s origins and conduct, and then the views of America’s Marxist and Islamic enemies. It was shocking enough that a major network would fund and promote a propaganda project like this. But its absurd fabrications were embraced with only a handful of dissents by the progressive culture and its academic establishment. The essay “Oliver Stone’s Communist History” reviews the Stone-Kuznick phenomenon as a watershed moment in the devolution of American liberalism and the American left.

Leland Yee: An Anti-Gun Democrat Jihadists Can Love

March 28, 2014 by Robert Spencer

sf-aa649_leland_g_20101208173843_0.jpg

California State Senator Leland Yee is the very model of a modern public servant.

Yee, a Democrat, has amassed a well-deserved reputation as an anti-gun crusader: shortly after Adam Lanza’s murderous rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012, Yee helped spearhead one of the toughest gun laws in the entire nation, banning the “bullet button” that allows shooters to change magazines on assault weapons quickly and easily. California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed this ban, but Yee remained committed to getting it enshrined in California law. So intent was Yee that Americans should not have various kinds of lethal weapons that he took it upon himself to hook up with international arms traffickers and an Islamic jihad group, in order to sell them millions of dollars’ worth of automatic weapons and missiles and thereby empty the U.S. of this lethal materiel.

Now that’s the kind of selfless willingness to put the public interest first that is so rare in American politicians today. This anti-gun public servant asked an FBI agent whom he thought was an international arms trafficker to give him a shopping list of weapons he wanted in exchange for $2,000,000 in cash, which was apparently to go to Yee’s campaign for California Secretary of State.

And why not? How urgently California needs Leland Yee! How many other anti-gun officials would be willing to take it upon themselves to rid their state of guns, by facilitating their shipment out of the country altogether? This wasn’t just a token gesture: Yee recounted that he told the undercover agent that some heavy weaponry was available: “I told him about the rockets and things like that.”

...

But some Infidels never learn. As the story of the selfless public servant Leland Yee proves yet again, there will always be some who put their narrow self-interest above their nation and their people. And always some Islamic jihadists willing to make the deal, and buy from them the scimitar they will ultimately use to behead them.
