U.S. Economy: Industrial Production, Confidence Climb (Update1) - BusinessWeek

Production in the U.S. rose for a sixth consecutive month, consumers gained confidence and price increases slowed, indicating the economic recovery is being sustained into 2010 without generating inflation.

When you read articles from business magazines and manufacturing magazines, the news is not great, but getting noticeably better.

Even on a personal level. Where i work, the manufacturing shop went from 40 hours a week to 16 hours a week for over three months. Pay for the office was cut 10% and no funds added to 401 and insurance and dental were partially cut.
Since the first of the year, hours are back to forty and this week, our 10% pay cut is rescinded.

Yet, Republicans are having none of it. In fact, it seems they not only want the country to fail, but they "desperately" want the country to fail. Of course, al Qaeda wants that also.

Absolute and total bullshit! As a life long Democrat I see your accusation is untrue and unethical. I will have no part of it.

Do you know the reality of the economy with 800,000 people a week filing for Unemployment Insurance?

Have you even bothered to track the Industrial Production numbers? Note, they are not worth tracking because manufacturing only makes up about ten percent of our economy. If manufacturing goes up three percent from the bottom, that only equates to 0.3 percent of added improvement to the overall economy. Have you looked at the Industrial Production numbers at all?

INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION Is down about 7% for the past 14 months. In August when car sales were “soaring” we had a brief uptick in production that slowed down in September. After that it has been acting like a weak, barely flopping fish out of water.

DEC 2009 + 0.6%
NOV 2009 + 0.6%
OCT 2009 - 0.0%
SEP 2009 + 0.6%
AUG 2009 + 1.2%
JUL 2009 + 1.0%
JUN 2009 – 0.4%
MAY 2009 – 1.2%
APR 2009 – 0.7%
MAR 2009 – 1.7%
FEB 2009 – 1.5%
JAN 2009 – 1.9%
DEC 2008 – 2.4%
NOV 2008 – 1.3%
OCT 2008 + 1.5%
SEP 2008 – 2.8%
AUG 2008 – 1.1%
JUL2008 + 0.1%
JUL2008 + 0.1%
JUN 2008 + 0.4%
MAY 2008 – 0.2%
APR 2008 – 0.7%
MAR 2008 + 0.2%
FEB 2008 – 0.7%
JAN 2008 + 0.1%
DEC 2007 + 0.1%
OCT 2007 – 0.7%
SEP 2007 + 0.2%
AUG 2007 + 0.2%

JUL 2007 + 0.5%
JUN 2007 + 0.5%
MAY 2007 - 0.0%
APR 2007 + 0.4%

Hopefully, some of that Industrial Production is going to retail sales. If it is, it is not having much of an effect on sales.

RETAIL SALES -- Retail trade sales are way DOWN from August 2009 and way below last year.
DEC 2009 – 0.3%
NOV 2009 +1.3%
OCT 2009 +1.1%

Ok, you are an incredibly weird democrat who wants Obama to fail. Feel better now?

Nobody wants the country to fail, but the facts are the facts. Obama has been asleep at the wheel, busy trying to ram Obamacare down our throats while the economy was secondary. The economy is in the shitter no matter how you measure it. If you are so confident in the "recovery" (sic) - invest all of your money in stocks. Personally, I am 100% cash and t-bills.

I can't agree with that.

I've heard Reps howling about how Obama would kill the economy since the time he started to win primaries.

To me there has been a very clear desire that he fail totally, and an even stronger desire to blame him for events which clearly took place before he took office, and to conjure up failure where none existed.

It is not a question of wanting Obama to fail. He already has ethically and morally and actually. It is a simple question of trying to warn as many people as possible that the Economy is collapsing, not improving as Obama and his merry band of crooks want you to believe.

All the while his assurance "that the economy is roaring ahead" has inspired many middle aged investors to put their 401K and IRA plans back into the stock market where they will be burned again.

I would love to see the economy turn around regardless of who is president. I had hope for Obama, but minutes after he was in office it was obvious that he jumped into bed with the Corrupt Big Bankers who want more of that investment money from the fools who trust Obama.

Here we are one year into Obama's term and has failed spectacularly on just about every promise and issue he ran on. Please cite some of the "successes" you think our tin-eared CIC has accomplished.

If his Presidency ended today, he'd be considered a miserable failure.

You are an idiot.

I will gladly challenge you to take an IQ test opposite me. We can use the standard Stanford IQ test. I will bet you ten thousand dollars a point. If you beat me by five points you would win Fifty Thousand Dollars. Of course, if this idiot beats you by one point, you will have to pay me Ten Thousand Dollars.

Please deposit Three Hundred Thousand Dollars in an Escrow account with Bank of America, because I am quite confident I can beat you by thirty points or more. Come on, Be a Man and put your money where your mouth is.

The republicans are not yet convinced they failed. They just think they were interrupted before they could finish the job.

Once he left office, Bill Clinton made a hundred and seven million dollars giving speeches. He was a popular president.

He never needed "land deals" and whatever other nonsense Republicans accuse him of.

Occasionally, some stupid drooling moron from the right tries to accuse Obama of being "on the take".

When Obama finishes being president, he will make three times, at least, the amount of Bill Clinton. Why settle for peanuts now? Obama isn't "Bush", scrambling to make a few bucks and hoping he's not booed, or worse, called a traitor. Or even worse, a murderer who needlessly killed thousands of American sons and daughters so he could "play war". Or the very worst, the idiot who let Bin Laden go scott free.

History will wonder, whose side Bush and the Republicans were on?

The two main reasons why the Long time Democrat incumbent lost in Westchester County in a 30% swing from 08 is:

1. Moderates, the elderly and Dems outside of the Kook Fringe are against ObamaCare and the Death March to Socialism, and

2. 70%, that's SEVENTY PERCENT of all businesses in the county immediately north of NYC has either flat or declining sales in 09. 70%

He'd be considered a mediocre president, I imagine, but clearly ahead of Bush, who is considered by most experts to be one of the worst Presidents of the 20th century (feel free to check that online).

But realistically, Obama has had some mild failures and some mild successes - nothing terribly dramatic in either direction. His foreign policy has been quite strong, and his policies on energy and the environment have gone some way in helping the US to catch up with other parts of the world.

The verdict is still out on the healthcare package, but it is assuredly an improvement over the rationing system you have had.

It will be some time before we can judge either that or his economic policies, but I doubt that will stop the gullible from just lapping up whatever the right wing blogs tell you is true.

Neubarth, Huggy -

Rather than put US$30,000 in an account - I would be happy to write and post 10 questions relating directly to international politics. The poster who gets the most answers correct wins bragging rights. You could send me your answers by PM so there will be no cheating. And they will all be fair questions, no tricks about who won the Gambian election in 1967 or anything silly.

Just post here if you agree, and I'll post the questions.

Worms eye view from a steel mill in Oregon. Orders are up for January, February, and March. Normally our slow months, but we have re-hired about 30 more people. Still not normal, but things are definately improving.

This time last year, we had laid off half of our people, and put the rest on shortened hours. Now, we are hiring, and all are working 40 hours or more.

I am glad to hear it. It partially offsets a tremendous avalanche of negative news about the economy.

For your sake I remind you that during the Great Depression, many businesses improved their financial and employment position. It is business in the aggregate that is the issue, not just one small segment of the economy. Manufacturing that uses steel is a very small portion of our economy; so small, in fact, that it has virtually no effect on the broad economic numbers. The steel industry has shrunk in this country from what it was over forty years ago. Those were the good days of strong employment in cities like Pittsburgh.

what production printing more money or printing more food stamps for the growing unemployed and the growing homeless.
the only production I see is the banksters getting richer and the middle class fading away
interest rate at a all time low but the the banks ain't giving any loans, but we bailed them out.
seeing so many people losing their homes, don't know how much more people can take.
found out a few towns over from me their are a few hundred people living in the woods in tents that lost their homes with kids etc.

I don't have to support policies I don't agree with no matter what. Stop trying to turn this into we hoping everyone dies. That is what you guys did for eight years under Bush and your news outlets trumpeted every downturn while hid every upturn. You did it to gain a political advantage and despite the fact that many democrats were employed those years and wages went up you still insisted this was the great depression.
