Priest-in-training caught trying to have sex with a 3 yr old

The reasons vary, but here are just a few:

1. Organizations provide a convenient infrastructure from which a predator can prey on others for financial gain or to otherwise exploit others (sexually, mentally, physically).

2. Membership in a legitimate institution, be it a club, a branch of the military, or a corporation, gives legitimacy to individuals. We are more respectful and trusting when we are told a certain person is a VP or head of sales for XYZ company rather than just a stranger off the street.

3. Organizations give predators ready and easy access to an identifiable pool of individuals or potential victims. A cable television installer, for instance, can gain access to a home, assess the level of security, appraise what is of value, or determine if the person lives alone.

4. Organizations give predators access to potential victims they otherwise might not come into contact with, or might have to spend a lot of time finding. Predators may even find potential victims conveniently working two cubicles away.

5. Alliances are easy to make in an organization. These can serve to provide the predator information about exploitable weaknesses of others, as well as proprietary, personal, or sensitive data otherwise difficult to obtain.

6. Colleagues within an organization can serve to warn or protect the predator as a result of conspiratorial alliances or because they have a fiduciary interest in those predatory practices (predatory accountants protecting predatory CEOs).

7. Some organizations can be very financially rewarding for predators where they can exercise their anti-social traits (e.g., lack of conscience, indifference to others, bullying, cavalier attitudes, minimal concern for the welfare of employees, narcissism, sense of entitlement, placing profits over people). Often a similarly calloused and indifferent board of directors, interested only in profits, rewards these predators and their anti-social acts. It is a toxic but profitable symbiotic relation that is all too often familiar.

8. Organizations often try to “handle” negative things in-house to avoid bad publicity, so they are reluctant to report even gross criminal misconduct on the part of the predators in their midst; preferring to transfer them, fire them, or have them leave quietly.

9. Organizations are sometimes structured in such a way that the predator merely has to take advantage of existing weaknesses in the organization in order to profit – as we saw with the banking debacle of 2008.

10. Predators know that in civil lawsuits victims will go after the corporation with the deeper pockets rather than go after individuals with limited financial resources.

Why Predators Are Attracted to Careers in the Clergy

What a sicko! Joel Wright, was allegedly trying to adopt or purchase a baby girl from Mexico, under the age of 4, have sex with her and film it. The dummy apparently spent weeks discussing this online.

Yuck!

Mr. Wright was studying to become a Roman Catholic priest at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio.

It would have been fair to the Church, et al. if the NY Times and all other anxious secular news organizations provided the other facts of this matter. That being, Joel A. Wright was a former seminarian, he was not presently a seminarian. Mr. Wright was in the seminary for all of one semester before he was dismissed from the program. I am not sure why he was terminated but it said leaving the campus without notification as one reason.

So despite all of the Catholic Churches wrong doings with abuses and cover ups, a story reported like this is simply wrong as it gives the casual reader false ideas of who, what and how.

I will give the NY Times just a tiny amount of credit, albeit dishonest once again. In this lengthy article they do say the following:

Mr. Wright was studying to become a Roman Catholic priest at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. The Rev. John Allen, vice president of the college, described Mr. Wright as a “former student” and said the college was “shocked and saddened” to learn of the “heinous and reprehensible” crimes he had been accused of.

Question to the NY Times: Where do you come off putting “former student” in quotation marks? He was a former student, for all of one semester only besides! Is the quotation marks to cause the reader to laugh and say “yeah right?” Nobody seems to care about their own integrity or accountability, only those they are pursuing.

I'm under the impression that Joel Wright is only a "former student" due to his recent activities. If you have a link showing otherwise, please provide it.

All of the other media outlets are claiming that he was a student at the time of arrest.

Ohio Seminary Student Arrested at San Diego Airport, Allegedly Sought Sex With Infants

Joel A. Wright, a priest-in-training at Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, was arrested after his plane landed in San Diego International Airport. He had planned to continue to Tijuana, where he would go to a hotel and buy the baby for sex, police said.

Wright, 23, now faces two federal sex charges. He was immediately expelled from his seminary school.

Seminary student allegedly planned sex with baby in Mexico

Looks like you got nothing!
Ok, it appears I may be wrong as I interpreted the following story to mean he was definitely a former student even before he took off for Mexico. That is not necessarily true and since I cannot be certain either way I apologize. The quotation marks around “former student” by the NY Times sent me on this chase.

Feds: Ohio clergy student arrested for seeking sex with baby

CLEVELAND (AP) — A former Ohio seminarian arrested for allegedly seeking to have sex with infants and young girls in Mexico was carrying $2,000 in cash along with baby clothes and a bottle in his luggage, a Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman said Sunday.

Joel Wright, who was arrested Friday in San Diego, had previously traveled to Tijuana in an unsuccessful attempt to adopt a child, authorities said.

According to the criminal complaint, the former student at Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus tried in 2014 to adopt a child in Mexico — going so far as to hand over an “adoption fee” in a Tijuana hotel room — and more recently spelled out in explicit online messages what he hoped to do with an infant and a 4-year-old girl.

…Rev. John Allen, vice president for advancement at Pontifical College Josephinum, said Wright began attending the school last fall and that he’d undergone a battery of psychological tests, interviews and a background check before being accepted. Wright lost his status at the seminary when he left the campus without authorization.

Send your apology to the New York Times.

It's really organizations with access to victims. Religious organizations are only one, but a devastating one because it often cuts victims off from spiritual healing in their religious tradition. So it's doubly damaging.

Youve been busted on this one you ignorant slag. Why do you need to lie in order to push your hate agenda ? I think that the state should consider taking your kids to save them from hate grooming. You are less than human.

I provided another link Twinkle Toes. now go shave that hideous Hitler looking stash off, you look ridiculous
Notice how you want to emphasize that gays are child molesters when the overwhelming majority are heteros.
the overwhelming majority of the pedophiles in the catholic church have been gay. I dont think that is really in question.
and once that is determined, maybe some changes could be made for priests that would not make it such an attractive profession for gays.
I suspect that this isnt the case. Could you point me to a source for this allegation ?

By definition, someone is gay or straight based on ADULT to ADULT behavior. Pedophilia is a fixation on CHILDREN. The gender of the child or the predator isn't relevant.

he US Catholic Bishops commissioned a study on priestly child sex abuse from John Jay College. John Jay researcher Margaret Smith reported back to the Bishops on early findings from their study. From the USA Today:

We do not find a connection between homosexual identity and the increased likelihood of subsequent abuse from the data that we have right now ... It's important to separate the sexual identity and the behavior. Someone can commit sexual acts that might be of a homosexual nature but not have a homosexual identity.
From the same article:

In the book Mental Disorders of the New Millennium (2006), author and psychology professor Thomas Plante writes:

Although the majority of clergy abuse victims are males, homosexuality cannot be blamed. First, many of the pedophile priests report that they are not homosexual. This is also true of many non-clergy sex offenders who victimize boys. Many report that they target boys for a variety of reasons that include easier access to boys ... pregnancy fears with female victims ... homosexuals in general have not been found to be more likely to commit sexual crimes against minors compared to heterosexuals. Sexual orientation is not predictive of sex crimes
.
Even Pope Benedict XVI, not exactly a liberal gay rights activist, has said the same thing:

Perhaps this is why Pope Benedict XVI himself, en route to the United States for his visit in 2008, responded this way to a question about the abuse crisis: "I do not wish to talk about homosexuality, but about pedophilia, which is a different thing." ~ Rev James Martin, SJ, It's Not About Homosexuality: Blaming the Wrong People for the Sexual Abuse Crisis, Huffington Post

Gay men are more likely to be pedophiles than heterosexual men.

While that myth was proved wrong by the American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and other professional medical groups, it persists. The state of Florida cited this myth in banning gay adoptions, until the law was stricken down by a federal court in 2010.

Why was he going to film it?

Because he's a sicko creep.
And this affects you in what way?

Oh, I'm sorry, I should have posted something about Muslim rape overseas.

This is a current event, Numbnuts. If you don't have anything to say about this topic, quit trolling the thread.

This thread is about a creepo trying to get his hands on a baby, but thankfully was unsuccessful.
Imagine if he didn't brag online. Luckily most creeps like the thrill of getting caught. Or bragging.

What a shocker! Poster passes off prejudice as fact and gets his arse handed back to him as soon as challenged.

My faith in anon posters with nutty agendas is shaken to the core.

Many predatory abusers premeditate abuse, fantasize about sexual interaction with children, often view child pornography, and select their victims carefully, investing effort and time to groom them into submission. Predatory offenders usually seek out opportunities to abuse - ex. teaching, coaching, even romantic relationships with women who have children, while others may choose these professions/relationships and later find themselves temped by their situation - being in a position of trust and/or authority involving children.

Opportunistic offenders, rather, acknowledge an opportunity that presents them with the chance to abuse a child - this may be true especially in cases involving immediate or extended family members or children that are well-known to them. Opportunistic offenders may still invest time/effort to groom & molest a child, or they may use physical force to subdue the child. Likewise, predatory offenders do not always groom their victims and may also act impulsively.
Understanding Abusers

Grew up a few blocks from a Catholic Seminary, and it was common knowledge the place was fraught with rapes, sodomy, and pedophilia. Not surprised by this thread.

We may never have the exact answer what specifically drives offenders, and no two predators think and act alike. While pedophiles are specifically driven by sexual-attraction to children, non-pedophilic perpetrators may be motivated by:

A sense of excitement and satisfaction in grooming and manipulating not only the child they're abusing, but even in deceiving the parents and community at large. Some may even qualify as sociopaths.
Low self-esteem, stress, or unmet emotional needs for intimacy & affection and use sexual gratification with a child as a means of coping with it. They may acknowledge that their behavior is wrong, and may even stop if the child resists, but if the abuse continues they may rationalize their behavior and minimize the abusive nature of their actions.
An unchecked sense of entitlement - that they are above others and have a "right" to do what they want without reproach and seek to dominate others.
Sexual deviancy - a desire to explore a variety of sexual experiences and may exhibit an addiction to sex & pornography.
Social Isolation- some offenders are considered eccentric, awkward loners, that don't socialize well with others and may exhibit what many would consider abnormal behavior. Such offenders may choose to sexually abuse children because they are less-threatening than their peers.
Understanding Abusers

Don't care what the reason is for offenders offending others. It's all deviant behavior regardless. No need to understand it. Simply recognize how screwed up it is period. They should all get their just due.
