So true! We never really OWN our own homes since we always have to PAY a property tax and we could lose our homes if we didn't pay the taxes. Talk about a socialistic approach - you get to work all your life to pay for your home but because you are now considered "wealthy" you get to keep on paying for those who didn't earn it. And if you don't pay, you lose everything you earned!

Many seniors find they have to sell their homes because they can't afford to pay the increasing property taxes anymore. If the tax rate is $10 per $1,000 of value an average home of $150,000 is paying $125 per month in taxes. If the value of the home doubles (median home value here in Seattle has jumped to $325k) or the rate doubles (rates are over $20 per $1000 in some states) you are looking at some pretty hefty taxes to pay. A home owner with a rate of say $15 and a home value of $300k is paying $375 per month. If he is getting only $1,000 per month in social security benefits (current average) a huge part of his retirement income is going towards home taxes alone. In some cases he may be paying more in taxes every month than he is paying on his mortgage payment. Unbelievable!

If we didn't have personal property taxes the government could never take our homes away from us. That's what I would call a true "social security".

Too generalized. I don't steal property yet I have voted Democrat. I don't own any real property yet I have voted Republican.

my house/property is worth about $190k, and we pay about $1650/year for taxes.

Mine house/property worth about the same. We Pay about $4100 in property taxes.

That's the difference between Democrats and Republicans, Dems steal property and Republicans steal elections! :)
