Not only did Reagan go on a secluded, 25-day California retreat, but his top aides reportedly stopped relaying news events to him so as to not disturb the president’s sojourn.

The annual summertime ritual of conservatives attacking Obama for going on summer vacation is swinging into high gear, as the president and his family prepare for a trip to Martha’s Vineyard.

Partisans are insisting the president doesn’t deserve a break and that it sends an awful message to the nation for him to take ten days off.

Context, though, is sometimes helpful in terms of highlighting how silly the cries of protest from the far-right media really are. For instance, at the same juncture of his first term, Ronald Reagan, like Obama, was battling a bad economy. Unemployment stood at 9.5%. Reagan’s response his third August in office? He set off for a nearly month-long vacation.

From the Washington Post, Aug. 22, 1983 [emphasis added]:

As President Reagan relaxes on his mountaintop ranch northwest of Santa Barbara, tucked away from the workaday cares of Washington, his top advisers have decided to put an end to what one of them calls "unnecessary news stories."

The negative news coverage that the president abhors was a topic of discussion at a White House breakfast the day before Reagan left on his present 25-day trip, the 17th stopover at his ranch since his election.

Coming from Media Matters, the OP claims have no credibility, and nobody should believe them. Cite a credible source, or give it up.

Remind me to send him a nasty letter. :eusa_whistle:

It is fine for republicans to take a lot of vacation cause they work so hard.
Besides Nancy's astrologers told him to do it.

Seems they don't care about Regan taking Vacations surely you'll soon hear the cries of "that's different" soon enough. Bush used to clear brush so often at his mansion err "ranch" that cons made up the story that tried to turn his landscaping duties into official presidential work.

They all take vacations. Obama has just done a lot of damage to this nation and his policies really suck. I'm not saying Bush didn't do bad things or have bad policies, but Obama has done much worst then Bush, Clinton, George HW Bush, Reagan and I'd dare say Carter.

It really comes down to doing a poor job and stealing trillions of dollars of our wealth to give to the bankers and globalist. Did Bush do this, yes. But nothing compared to Obama.

These people suck. But Obama is just better at fucking up this country then the past 4-5 presidents.

I would like it if he would take more vacations, so he does less damage to this country. When Washington is out of town we are all much safer.

excellent. at least reagan apparently used the time wisely lets hope when obama gets back he'll do the same thing reagan did,... start a ride to 7% gdp, dropping unemployment etc etc etc ...to bad that the time line doesn't work for you, by this time after the end of the recession reagan had us on that path of growth, obama? here we sit........

Actually we have all done a poor job. What the hell do we expect from Washington?? some Messiah? Good luck with that! At those standards Bush sucked and Obama sucks. Guess what? I ain't looking for no government to save me. They are looking for us to save them. Good luck with that.

Remember. we are still the strongest, most viable and innovative force on the planet.

As long as we are looking at China and the EU no wonder we are feeling downtrodden. Look up cause we are American! Unique to the planet.

Yeah, and we also had just been downgraded for the first time in history, the stock market was in the dumps, and Reagan didn't have any plan, correct?

LMAO!

Reagan went HOME to his own ranch in California, just like both Bushes went HOME to their residences in Kennebunkport, Maine and Crawford, Texas when they needed a break.

So why doesn't Obama go HOME to his residence in Chicago for his vacations, instead of billing the taxpayers for his extravagant vacation rentals and around-the-world tours? I won't even talk about the extravagant vacations Manchelle has taken at taxpayer's expense. That's a whole other topic.

I don't have a problem with a President taking a break. It's a tough and high-stress job. But when the President spends MILLIONS of dollars in taxpayer money to barnstorm around the world and rent out ocean estates, those are the actions that DICTATORS and MONARCHS are, and were, famous for.

REAL "leaders" lead by EXAMPLE. They don't lead by thumbing their noses at the people who put them in the position to be a leader.

George W. Bush's vacation time (grand total)

487 days at Camp David
490 days at Crawford Ranch
43 days at Kennebunkport Compound

Total: 1020 days, more than 1/3rd of his presidency. Bush set the record for most vacation time taken by president.

Carter took 79 days in 4 years.
Clinton took 152 days in 8 years.

Reagan took 335 days in 8 years.
Bush Sr. took 543 days in 4 years!

So much for the mythological Republican hard worth ethic.
