President Obama to give FDA New Guidelines

After years and years of not properly funding or running FDA as it was intended, I'd say it's about time.

The Neo-con's appreciation for regulation free business anarchy has not served the public well in many arenas.

Food safety being one of the more obvious examples.
sorry, but the NEOCONS are the ones closer to your way of thinking than mine
and please point out any FDA regulations Bush had canceled

Got over 60000 regulations in the FDA alone yet there are cries of more.:cuckoo:
Regulations.gov

I wish they'd abolish the FDA myself.

So they could abolish regulations on food? Yeah, great idea! Who needs regulation when it comes to feeding ourselves and our children???

You need the FDA to tell you what you can eat or what your children can eat? You know, things are regulated now and more people than ever are getting sick. Millions of people eat things each year that was prepared without being regulated, church groups that have dinners to raise money for charity, shrimp and crawfish boils down here in Louisiana put on by organizations to raise money, hunters eat game they have killed, fish out of private ponds, local Farmer's Markets etc. Where are all the news articles that show THESE groups are dying off or getting sick.:eusa_whistle:

Yes, that's great! We also have about 40 people at my brother's house on Thanksgiving, nobody there is checking the food for contamination.

But this bill is talking about regulating food for MILLIONS of people, not just the 4H Club or the local rodeo.

Here's an interesting article on deregulation.

millions upon millions have lived without the all great and powerful FDA throughout history.

Milton Friedman .....

ROBINSON So your view is abolish the FDA..

FRIEDMAN Absolutely [ROBINSON And what comes up in its place?] what comes up? It's in the self-interest of pharmaceutical companies not to have these bad things. Do you think the manufacturer of Thalidomide made a profit out of Thalidomide or lost? [ROBINSON I see, ok.] And you have to have..people should be responsible for harm that they do. It should've been possible...[ROBINSON So tort law takes care of a lot of this.] Absolutely, absolutely..

ROBINSON Alright, if Lilly or Merck comes up with a drug that does me harm, I go after them, I join a class action with everybody else who's taken that pill and we sue them for billions of dollars and wipe out their share holders equity. Seeing that, they have every interest to be extremely rigorous in testing that drug before they make it available.

FRIEDMAN Let me give you a different example. The rules imposed on airlines, for safety. Who has the most interest in preventing airline accidents.

ROBINSON After the passenger themselves, the airlines.

FRIEDMAN Well it's not even clear that the passengers have more interest than the airlines because included in the passengers are the pilots. [ROBINSON Right, of course] Why is the government going to improve airline safety? How are they going to do it? How do they add any incentive to anybody to improve airline safety?

ROBINSON Does Milton Friedman really oppose all health and safety regulation? Let me try this one on him- doesn't the public have the right to know about the nutritional content of the food it buys?
Hoover Institution - Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson - TAKE IT TO THE LIMITS: Milton Friedman on Libertarianism

So John Rocks, you are saying you explicitly trust anyone who would make food to sell to millions of people, without any kind of guidelines, and there should be no regulation.

one has to wonder about the sanity of someone who relies upon a foundation named after the person who got us into the great depression and whose name is synonomous with hoovervilles.

just sayin.

Yes, now things like local and state health standards can still apply, we have an incentive to make sure our local establishments are clean but those that own these establishments have an incentive also. Things like fraud, negligent homicide due to selling rotten meat would still be on the books. Look at the underworld drug world, it's run by people that are ruthless as hell, they don't care really if you live or die yet they have an incentive to sell their cocaine that is weakened, they know that 100% pure cocaine will kill their clients, you don't hear of people being poisoned by the thousands who consume illegal drugs such as marijuana either. Where was all the deaths prior to FDA, were people dying in droves prior to all these rules? What about the hundreds of billions of dollars it costs to run the FDA and businesses to abide by these rules, it hurts the small time meat markets, people like Hormel love the FDA, local butchers are almost extinct because of all these rules and regulations.

lol, blaming the Great Depression on Hoover, that's a good one but what about Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman? What about this organization?
Economists Against the FDA: Publications: The Independent Institute

Go ahead and trust bureaucrats and Statists if you want to, I'll pass.:cuckoo:

I'm afraid I don't put much stock in Friedman because he's been proven wrong.

And yes, I do blame Hoover's inaction for the severity of the depression. That's why they were hoovervilles... everything else is revisionist history.

I wish they'd abolish the FDA myself.

:clap2:

I agree!

And I think the GOP should put that in their platform.

Personally, I think Upton Sinclair was a liar. I think he made all that shit up about meat processing plants mixing in rats with beef back in the 1920s, before regulation. I think he was a commie, who made all that crap up.
only JohnRocks ISNT a republican
you are just too fucking stupid for words

just because some people blamed Hoover, doesnt mean it was his fault
a lot of people blame Bush for Katrina, did Bush make that hurricane happen?
NOPE

Really? Is this revisionist history.

The Depression of 1921? Read up on it, it started out WORSE than the Great Depression yet only lasted a few months since government stayed out. Look it up if you don't believe me.

Hoover was anything but a free marketer unless you want to say this is A) free market and B) Revisionist history

1. Hoover signed the Emergency Relief and Construction Act, the nation's first Federal unemployment assistance.

2.Asked Congress for a $400 million increase in the Federal Building Program

3.Directed the Department of Commerce to establish a Division of Public Construction in December 1929.

4.Signed the Federal Home Loan Bank Act establishing the Federal Home Loan Bank system to assist citizens in obtaining financing to purchase a home.

5.Signed the Agricultural Marketing Act.

6. Established the Emergency Relief Organization.

7.Signed the Reconstruction Finance Act. This act established the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, which made loans to the states for public works and unemployment relief. In addition, the RFC made loans to banks, railroads and agriculture credit organizations.

8.Raised tariffs:cuckoo:

9. Signed the Revenue Act of 1932 raised taxes on the highest incomes from 25% to 63%. The estate tax was doubled and corporate taxes were raised by almost 15%. Hoover also encouraged Congress to investigate the New York Stock Exchange and this pressure resulted in various reforms.

Even FDR's first Vice President John Nance Garner, accused the Republican of "leading the country down the path of socialism".

How is Friedman proven wrong or free marketers? They have not been in control in damn near 100 years!

i thought you changed to libertarian last year

if not, oops, my bad

Her choice, if that's what she wants to do. I don't hear the stories coming from all these diseases coming from unregulated farmer's markets but from processed foods that are already regulated by the FDA. Hell, the illegal drug market is totally unregulated, where are all the pot smokers that are poisoned or cocaine users that are dead because of this unregulated market?

the drug cartels realize a very important fact that eludes many of our food suppliers......a bad product is.....BAD FOR BUSINESS...AND death usually brings people (namely Cops) sticking their noses in the business........

Exactly, that would happen with the food and drug industries also.

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...because the marketplace will keep suppliers from selling you meat with mad cow disease.

exactly why people who hate government should never run government.

Like my last post stated, where are the problems coming from with mad cow, the big ranchers already regulated or the small farmers with a few head. Why isn't the Amish community extinct if we need all this regulation? What about all the regulated peanut butter causing death and sickness and I haven't even got started on the drug issue.

have you ever heard of a market called Whole Foods?....their meat cost a little bit more,BUT they dont like the FDA's lax regs on inspection.....so they buy from selected ranchers and do their own testing as well....they sell Bison meat as well....what a steak....

I bet it's good! The bill HR 875 may strangle the organic farm industry and small time plot farmers though if the liberals have their way.
