Like I said, this is a depression and I don't see a way out of it. It started in the 70's with changes in corporate law and it just kept getting worse with each president. I think it's clear the corporations own our government. The sad thing is that the CEOs are so stupid, they didn't realize that by reducing our unemployment and income that they were getting rid of those who could afford to buy their goods and so caused the depression in the first place. Henry Ford was smart, when he started paying his employees a fair wage, suddenly they could afford to purchase the cars they were building and his sales went through the roof.

Our factories have all shipped overseas and are paying workers so little that they can't even afford to buy a pair of the shoes they are making.

Don't you think this has much to do with the age of electronic banking and computers? couple that with the increased price in fuel, it's no wonder they are losing money. Another question. I have no idea. What did the major three auto makers pay in hourly wages? Their CEO's"

Has anyone stopped to consider that the USPS competes with Fed-X and UPS and given the fact they are facing stiff competition from that and the massive increase in electronic forms for of mail it is not surprising that the USPS would be looking at lay-offs.

Makes sense to me. Moral to the story: JOIN THE UNION!

All I can think of is that most of those people are lower-middle class white families.

But when it comes time to re-hire, affirmative action will be back in full swing. They'll be replaced with good union-due paying minority socialists.

Yes look how much the Union has helped in the profitability with Boeing recently? Here is a Union that during an economic slow down, and with Boeing being the only domestic commercial Aircraft builder they go on strike costing Boeing and the employee's billions. Yes great idea join the Union!!! While I don't have a thing against Unions in general, it would seem to me that if an employee does not wish to join a Union they should not be forced to do so , or be forced to pay Union dues to simply work for a company. Further, IMHO Union employee's should be treated no differently that any other employee during downsizing of any company.

But we all know union employees are given preferential treatment over non-union employees, especially with the new climate in Washington. So if you choose to work in a union shop, you'd better join the union if you want to keep your job when times get tough. (Especially since union shops cannot handle an economic downturn as well as other companies since unions are usually innefficient and costly.)

Another reason the USPS is losing money is because for a while they they were rolling in it due to ebay.....Ebay is tanking these days as well. They probably hired those 40,000 people when ebay was in its prime....http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/snapshot/snapshot.asp?symbol=EBAY

DHL also cut it's USA operations (they're a German company) today.

This isn't good news, people. When the federal government (or a quasi-fed entity) starts laying off massive amounts of people it's because the economy is in serious trouble because people aren't spending money.

Do you have any data or is that something to bring on another attack on Affirmative Action? What are the demographics of the USPS? Any idea or just more anti anti crap?

If you don't have the data, don't make the false accusations. Your sound bite socialist remarks are getting a little worn out.

Do you know what they pay their workers? Why lower middle class.

You are just a font of something or other.

Laying off the postal workers, yes, the coming depression no. These laid off postal workers are just going to add to the depression.

Yeah, the economy is bad, but Boeing made record profits and had the nerve to cut retirement and healthcare benefits. This wasn't about a pay raise, this was about take aways. Many people have already put in 20-40 years with Boeing and they've had take aways before so they could have more in their retirement years but now that so many are getting ready to retire, Boeing wants to take those retirement benefits they ALREADY worked for away from them, this at a time when they've made RECORD profits.

Yeah, Unions are terrible, after all, they brought us the 5 day work week, the end of child labor, overtime, sick leave, health benefits, holidays, gee how terrible.

One more thing, Boeing WANTED the strike. They outsourced all those parts for the 787 and when they all came together none of them fit. The strike gave Boeing an excuse for not making on time deliveries and gave them a break financially. IMO, the Union shouldn't have struck, but then if they hadn't Boeing might be going bankrupt, what with all the fines they'd have to pay for late deliveries.

The only people who lost anything in this strike was the workers, who lost the income they would have made during that time.

Assuming 60 hour weeks and a 48 week year Ford paid Alan Mulally
$21,670,674 or $7,524.53 per hour in 2007; and

$28,183,476 or $9,785.92 per hour in 2006

http://www.ford.com/doc/2008_proxy.pdf

Well, that's capitalism for you. Free market gets to determine your salary. Starbucks CEO made $16.1 million in 2006.

Alan only recieved $2M in Salary, the rest was "Performance Compensation" makes you wonder what he would have made if Ford wasn't in need of a government bailout?

Oh, BTW he probobly paid Federal Tax on about $8M of his $21M last year.

How many times the average employees salary is that???

Good grief, no one "earns" that much money.

Ahhhhhrgh…communist Obama Kool-Aid drinker!

What gives you the right to determine how much someone can earn.

Seriously though, how can that possibly be justified given Ford’s financial situation, you would think that at least 50% of Fords shareholders would have a problem with that.

BTW Ford’s shareholders think the CEO is worth as much as 375 line workers, yup and it’s all those damn Unions Fault, without them the CEO would be worth at least 500 auto workers.:eusa_boohoo:
