If Romney goes to Ohio, why not Gov. John Kasich over Rob Portman?

That would be a mistake. Kasich is hated right now because of SB5, and if Romney's smart he'll stay as far away from that as possible. Portman is the best possible choice, politically speaking, if he wants someone from Ohio.
