Looks like Republicans are losing ground on one of their main selling points. And it's no wonder given their complete opposition to raising taxes even by the smallest of margins on millionaires; and now this new fiasco of their own doing on the payroll tax cut.

Poll suggests Obama is winning the tax debate over GOP

According to the Washington Post/ABC News survey, 46% of respondents side with Obama on the tax issue, while 41% side with Republicans. Among political independents, Obama wins the tax question by a margin of 49%-32%.

Where would you draw the lines?

At what income level do you raise taxes, and how much do you raise them?

Oh, and one other teenie tiny little question.... after you raise their taxes, do you keep on spending like an idiot with 1/4 of a brain?

It's important to note that this is the number who approve of Obama's handling of taxes. The respondents weren't asked about the payroll tax cuts specifically, which are much more popular.

The Republicans are refusing to even hold a vote on it.

There's two things going on here. 1. They want to prevent an extension of the payroll tax cut, if possible, and 2. They want to blame it on the Democrats.

It's like dealing with weasels and snakes.

Obama is cleverly forcing the GOP House to pull the trigger with the tax gun against their head.

The polls will only grow in BHO's favor if the GOP does not compromise.

Well gee! You set the number at about 99%. The plan is to loose one vote and gain 99. I figure if I pay 10 times as much in taxes, I should get ten times as much say in how that money is spent.

House Republicans just voted to raise taxes on 160 million Americans.

The Tea Party is leading the Republicans to destruction.

Thanks guys!

Let the Bush tax cuts expire in Dec of 2012 and raise the rates on the top 10%.

I also see you guys are not saying at what income level you raise taxes, and how much you raise them?

Let all the tax cuts expire including the payroll tax, then cut some discretionary spending, then determine how we are going to pay for SS and Medicare short term and long term. There are many things at play here. Revenue is down 30%, in great part due to tax rates being decimated. However, while revenue is down 30%, spending is up 40%. Spending is up for many reasons; we have more money going out to cover unemployment, Medicaid, and welfare programs due to the lagging economy. All military costs are now actually being accounted for and not hidden, and they have gone up dramatically since 9/11. SS is not longer even covering itself with the payroll tax cuts, and it is also no longer showing a surplus that can be borrowed by the general fund.

Bottom line is that we need to raise taxes and cut spending. We also need to get the economy moving again as that will help increase revenues on top of any tax increases. The funny thing about all of this is that we have the ability to solve our problems. We have the ability to fund most of our programs. Much of it has to do with prioritizing what is most important to us and how much we are willing to pay. In the end, the only thing we cannot do is to continue borrowing like drunken sailors. We can borrow a very small amount if necessary, but the books need to come close to balancing out.

We are not going to pay off the debt. That isn't happening, nor should we even concern ourselves with doing so. However, we also cannot allow our debt to continue to accumulate above the rate of economic growth and inflation.

What is "the tax issue?" Your article doesn't say. We don't how the question was actually phrased in the poll, so the results are meaningless.

Your article is deliberately vague, and there's probably a reason: that is, they are basically lying.

Uhhh....the opening sentence in the article says......

As President Obama wrestles with congressional Republicans over an extension of the payroll tax cut, a new poll suggests that Obama is winning the political battle on the tax issue

Let's take everything to the 1993 levels which led to Clinton's balanced budget.

Take government spending to the same level as 1993?

I'll take that deal in a heartbeat, but I doubt most of the libtards in here will like it.

Pkenty of Americans understand that the RICH have gotten too sweet a deal as it regards taxation.

But I do NOT think America will win, if we raise taxes right now.

As President Obama wrestles with congressional Republicans over an extension of the payroll tax cut, a new poll suggests that Obama is winning the political battle on the tax issue

If you follow the link to the the original Washington Post article on the issue, it says the following:

Perhaps more important to the battle over the payroll tax cut, Obama has regained an advantage over Republicans in Congress when it comes to “protecting the middle class.” In the new poll, 50 percent say they trust Obama on this issue, compared with 35 percent who choose the GOP — a major change from last month, when the two sides were more evenly matched on the question.

On taxes, Obama has improved since early October, while public trust of the GOP has slipped. Forty-six percent now side with Obama on the issue, and 41 percent with Republicans in Congress. Independents now side with the president on that front by a 17-point margin, 49 to 32 percent.

In other words, nowhere does it mention the poll asking specifically about the payroll tax issue. In the actual poll all it asks if you approve of the way Obama is handling taxes.

In short, it's deliberately vague and it doesn't specifically mention the payroll tax.

A weighted poll with a highly suspect sampling proves nothing.

The only thing it proves is that the media is willing to lie to help Obama.

When have the Washington Post or ABC ever performed an honest poll?

These are push polls - propaganda, in other words.
