A number of readers emailed us this week about news reports that Chrysler is moving forward with a partnership in China to produce Jeeps. They wondered: Doesn’t that disprove our Lie of the Year -- that Mitt Romney said Barack Obama "sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China" at the cost of American jobs?

No, it doesn’t.

We were clear in our original Oct. 29 fact-check and our Dec. 12 Lie of the Year story that Jeep intended to build cars in China to sell in the Chinese market. News reports this week don't really say anything new. They simply say that Jeep is going ahead with that plan.

Our story focused on the clear message of the Romney campaign’s ad, that jobs in the United States were being moved to China, or perhaps that Jeep was moving its entire operations to China. That is not the case and has never been the case.

Typical CON trick, keep repeating a LIE and hope it sticks!

Its Fiat/Chrysler's foot in the door. "Oh we're only building the Jeeps that we intend to sell to the Chinese in China" Mebbee at the start, but that phrase has all the ring of veracity as a Harrison Ford "Trust me!" phrase.
When the folks at Fiat/Chrysler headquarters get a look at the labor tab for the made in China vehicles versus the labor tab for the made in the USA cars plus the fact that no customers are complaining about finding half smoked marijuana joints or six empty bottles of Thunderbird in the cars that get delivered to the customers, the execs are going to start wondering what they're doing still makin cars in the good ol US of A. Your short term memories have gotten really, really short. Remember when Daimler bought Chrysler for a pretty penny, then around a month after taking possession of Chrysler, after dealing with the UAW and the American work ethic, or lack of one, for 30 short days, Daimler was screaming "Get us the frog out!! We can't take it no more! Somebody! Anybody! We'll take any price you want to offer! Any price you want to pay us! We'll take anything! Just get us out!!!" Chrysler finally changed hands for less than a quarter of what the Germans paid for it. Should bankruptcy have been any surprise? When Ken Langone and Cerberus borrowed a ton of money to take Chrysler over, it was the final nail in Chrysler's coffin. The UAW is the problem. If Fiat can't make a go of it, and after Fiat teaches the Chinese whatever manufacturing techniques the Chinese still don't know, they'll sell it to the Chinese, or if the Gummint still has a clause or hooks in Chrysler that prevents Fiat from selling it to the Chinee, they'll do a 'Wonderbread' with the company. Chrysler is dead, but the folks that own it or still work for it don't know it yet. Maybe if Barry gets a rip roaring inflation fire going in the US economy he might be able to save the company for the UAW again. Though at that point it will be a question of how long before the Chinee realize they're lending us dollars at full value but getting dollars back worth only a few cents of the ones they loaned us. Remember the dollar that could buy gas at nineteen cents a gallon? We're forced to deal with a dollar that buys gas at $3.50 a gallon today. The Germans thought they were being clever doing the same thing with the reparations Britain and France forced down their throats after the First World War. They got Hitler in exchange.

Where is LDS?

LDS??? Don't you mean LSD, that is if you're a Union Chrysler worker standing around in the parking lot on their lunch break... Well that, some weed, and a few beers to wash it all down.

This is a non-story. A fantasy. Hopefully sensible Republicans will not pay attention. Was Politifact overzealous in calling the Lie of the Year? That's debatable, but it was still a lie. 2011's Lie of the Year was the Dems saying the Reps voted to get rid of Medicare, but you don't see anybody claiming THAT was propaganda, do you?

Stop crying about Politifact being a liberal propaganda tool and find some better things to do with your time.

So, LDS doesn't want to get in on this joint?

The fact remains though, those jobs could have been created in the US. Obama could have spoke up and expressed his displeasure. But Barry isn't a job creator is he.

The problem with that is that if he blocked Chrysler opening a plant in China and said, "No, you're building them here," the GOP would be crying foul and screaming that he was... I dunno, blocking capitalism or the free market or some shit.

I'm fairly certain she's become disenfranchised with the GOP and has stopped supporting the lot of them in favor of a group closer to her ideals.

The Morlocks?

I have yet to see ONE conservative on this board admit that this was a lie the first time or the second time.

Is there some sort of contagion that affects the conservative brain?

Who with any semblance of a normal brain can think that anything is gained by trying to spread and perpetuate an obvious lie?

Hell, I can remember at least wingnut idiot on here (who will go nameless) who used the lie in his avatar for a while.
