Yes, nowadays young people know that nothing substantial will happen to them if they act badly.

During President Obama's administration, for example, his education department told all schools to stop suspending students for defiance of teachers.

The administration agreed with activists that too many students of color were being suspended.

Today most pubic schools are expected to arrange for the teacher and defiant student to have a meeting. Both the teacher and the defiant student pour our their feelings to each other.

I have read that many dedicated teachers are leaving the profession.

Another factor is, we don't fight fair. Departmental policy is to not risk injury to the officer unless absolutely necessary. It's better to let an idiot go if the odds aren't decisively in your favor than to risk injury to members. You'll always get another chance to arrest the idiot, they can't help themselves.

I'm recalling the time (1950s/60s) when New York City cops were armed with .38 revolvers and they carried "nightsticks" whether night or day. That stick was about 32" long by 1-1/2" thick with a rawhide thong and it was a formidable weapon. It was capable inflicting pain, breaking bones, cracking skulls, or causing death.

Using that baton, one well-trained and practiced cop was capable of controlling groups of individuals. The big trick, which most New Yorkers were aware of, is if someone grabbed hold of a cop's nightstick the action placed a weapon in that individual's hand and justified the cop's use of his revolver in self-defense.

The nightstick should be re-issued on day or night tours.

We currently carry a collapsible ASP baton that, when extended, is the same length at the wooden baton. It's made of steel and is easily as formidable as the old school baton. It's fully capable of breaking bones, tearing tissue, and cracking a skull.

Many cops prefer to deploy the OC Spray or the CED because they, most of the time, cause less permanent damage and less likely to end you up in court.

what BLM/etc, many do not understand is the if someone physically resists, and has to be subdued physically by force--the laws of nature state something '''will get broken''/someone will get hurt/something has to give/break-etc
