Planned parenthood hit with $5.5 billion fraud suit

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland faces Medcaid fraud allegation | Des Moines Register Staff Blogs

June said Planned Parenthood attorneys have not been served with papers, but are aware of the allegations and provided “hundreds of thousands of internal documents and files dating back to 2006.”

Susan Thayer, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director from Storm Lake, brought the lawsuit in March 2011 under state and federal whistle-blower laws that allow people with knowledge of fraud involving government contractors to bring allegations forward in the form of a lawsuit.

The statute seals the complaint while state and federal authorities review it and decide if either the U.S. attorney general or Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller’s office wants to prosecute the case. Neither office took up the complaint.

“Despite the audit both federal and state government have declined to exercise their right to intervene in the matter,” June said.
