Voltaire was an effete elitist prick. He was one of the main reasons the French Revolution occurred and so many people were slaughtered due to his amoral driveling.

His philosophy was also, ironically, very popular with every tyrant in Europe from Napoleon to Catherine the Great and Frederick the great.

While he had some redeeming qualities, his repudiation of basic value of human life wrote the license for every mass murder to Stalin and Mao.
