Petraeus vs. Clinton. Do Sexual Affairs Threaten National Security?

The sudden departure of a compromised CIA director hasn’t been an episode of Showtime’s espionage drama Homeland, but it could be.

The story of David Petraeus’s resignation is evolving, and we may know more soon enough. But for now, he is said to have resigned because he committed marital infidelity in a way that could have exposed the U.S. to harm. Greta van Susteren of Fox News says his jobs as a general and CIA director made him “very vulnerable to blackmail from those with very bad intentions against the United States.”

Fair enough, but many commentators took an entirely different line 15 years ago when President Bill Clinton, who had access to all of our nation’s secrets, was caught having an affair with an intern named Monica Lewinsky. The Starr Report, released in September 1998, revealed that Clinton told Lewinsky that “he suspected that a foreign embassy was tapping his telephones, and he proposed cover stories” if they were ever questioned about their relationship.

When she left the White House, Lewinsky got a cushy Pentagon job, complete with a security clearance. Later, after Lewinsky threatened to expose the relationship, Clinton accepted her demand for a well-paying job in Manhattan and then asked a friend, Vernon Jordan, to make the contacts. Lewinsky told her then-confidante Linda Tripp that the president owed her something special: “I don’t want to have to work for this position. I just want it to be given to me.” But none of this brought down Clinton, who was acquitted by the Senate in a impeachment trial for having committed perjury before a federal judge.

Foreign governments must be chuckling at the thought that the world’s superpower has been consumed with the Petraeus scandal. Former Financial Times editor Eamonn Fingleton points out on the Forbes website: “Similarly ‘mission critical’ officials in other nations are not similarly vulnerable. This applies in spades in East Asia. Whether we are talking about China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, or any other nations of the Confucian world, a man’s sexual behavior is — within large limits — not a national security issue. It is simply taken for granted that ‘boys will be boys.’” In addition, governments in most of those nations — unlike the U.S. government — spy on their officials and usually know all there is about them. Other nations also often know about the personal vulnerabilities of U.S. officials long before our own government does.

The sexual affair was trotted out as an excuse for the general's resignation and avoidance of testifying. Otherwise no one would care.

No one said any different. It's the hypocrisy of the Left when you give the president a pass for the same indescretion. Petreaus did the right thing by stepping down. Bubba sat there and lied to the American people on national TV by stating, "I didn't have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky."

Right Wing Politics & National Security: Exhibit A: General Petraeus

Fox News strategic analyst Lt. Col. Ralph Peters weighs in again as he so often does with a view of what happens or could have happened according to a wingnut view of reality
Lt. Col. Ralph Peters On Petraeus: "Timing Is Just Too Perfect" | RealClearPolitics
(Ralph Peters (born 1952) is a retired United States Army Lieutenant Colonel and author. As a novelist he has sometimes written under the pen name Owen Parry. He never served actual combat duty...but he was an expert on Soviet Union ala Condi Rice  Oddball Dude and Crusader Frank?),

contrast the Lt. Col. FOX News Mouthpiece with Jack Howard Jacobs (born August 2, 1945) is a retired colonel in the United States Army and a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions during the Vietnam War.

Some analysts said Petraeus's exit was the only way to prevent a lengthy, distracting scandal as embarrassing emails and other details of the affair emerged.

"Bad news doesn't get any better with age. I'm surprised it took the president 24 hours to accept the resignation. Dragged out it would be much, much worse. It's the best thing for the country," retired Army Col. Jack Jacobs said on NBC.
No Pass For Patraeus

We have examples right here @ USMB, people like Charles who claim to be fair and balanced (I'm sure in their own warped minds they are as ignorance is bliss)...
What I don't get is why him Stepping down, means he can't testify. He was the Director at the time the questions will be about, he is a central player in the Investigation. The fact they felt the need to announce he wont be testifying at the same time he steps down, just makes them look even more like they are hiding stuff.

Both Congressional and Senate investigational committees have the power to subpoena someone to testify before them. Petraeus would be obligated under the law to appear and testify. That's a fact Jack.

His apparent involvement with a writer may have complicated the situation for Petraeus.

Congress has been irate in recent months over national security-related leaks. In July, the Senate Intelligence Committee proposed legislation requiring intelligence officials to report all contacts with the media. Discussion of such issues would have been exceedingly awkward if the CIA director had an intimate relationship with a writer that became public, even if she wasn't a traditional journalist\

The right wing would sacrifice the economy, and national security if it meant beating on other Americans they view as enemies. They have no political opponents, they only have enemies. They have a mental illness.

If there were right wingers among the men in Philadelphia, we would never have gained Independence or have ratified the US Constitution.

Right wingers are a 'faction' of the kind Madison and others feared more than anything. Factionalists threaten cohesion and compromise, the very things needed for a republic to thrive and survive.

The right wing faction has taken over the GOP. It's time others outside the GOP helped fellow citizens within the GOP battle the enemy within -- the right wingers

Testifying to what, exactly?

You know there's another story floating around that the CIA was keeping prisoners in the consulate.

Which, I also think is bullshit, but if the CIA was holding Al Qaeda in the consulate and beating the shit out of them for Intel..would you guys object?

Really?

Clinton was impeached.

Second Democrat in history.

To this day..no Republican President has been impeached.

whether you be the President or the CIA director, you are privy to classified, sensitive info. As a rule you do not want people who put themselves in Compromising situations like an Extra martial affair to have access to state secrets.

It makes them Vulnerable, It's no different than the fact that you can't get a Top Secret Security clearance if you have financial Problems. Its a red flag that says hey this person could be compromised, lets not let them know any Secrets we don't want getting out.

I have nothing But respect for Petreaus, but he did the right thing in stepping down, and was incredibly irresponsible for what he did.

Petreaus should testify to anything the Senate Intelligence Committee asks. Starting with "What was the basis of your claim that the attack was instiigated by a movie?" If the CIA was holding prisoners and beating the shit out of them, the US has an obligation to do everything possible to protect the guys beating the shit out of Al Quaeda.

Instead, the United States was complicit in the deaths of four Americans, or obamalandians in you prefer, and the attempted murder of 26 more.

Monica was not the reason for the investigation on Clinton. He was being investigated for numerous other sexual assaults. As far as Monica not being a security risk. It is well known she could not keep her mouth shut.

Absolutely a sexual affair has the potential to threaten national security, whether directly from one of the participants or if someone else was to find out about it as it appears happened with Petraeus.

And because of that potential anyone who has put themselves in such a position should resign or be appropriately dismissed if they refuse to step down. And it's got nothing to do with morality IMO. People with knowledge of sensitive info who've violated the trust our country put in them to safeguard it should therefor be punished for doing so as well as made an example to everyone else of whom such trust is expected.

Clinton was NOT being investigated for sexual assaults. You have your facts wrong. Why is that no surprise?

Sexual indiscretions do not threaten security any more than they ever have.

My god are you people so naive as to think that dalliances among the powerful haven't been happening since the dawn of time?

I wonder how many power players are getting head from a mistress this very moment.

the sexual blackmail cases we know of do not involve threats from foreign governments or espionage.

As usual, Americans are being too prudish
