Seriously why do people stereotype? Why can't we see each other as human beings? Why are people for aggressive classification of people into groups? Who supports this? Conservatives? Liberals?

Those who must find a category that they can label as less than human, so they can justify whatever horrors they care to commit on that group.

Both your sister and a girl her age in Africa are dying and they need your bone marrow to save them. Pick one. Don't be tribalist.

Which group of Americans support it the most? Liberals or conservatives?

Human beings are tribal. We seek out and associate with people like ourselves.
No law. No pounding of heads into the pavement with the sledgehammer of political correctness is going to change that..
Case closed.

ROFL! I totally misread 'tribalism' thinking it was about 'tribadism.' "Why is that in the Politics group?" I wondered. :)

Stereotyping is easier than actually dealing with an issue if you can silence someone by vilifying them through stereotyping then you win the debate without ever having to defend your position or explain why it's the right one.

Because stereo types actually are based in a huge portion of reality. There of course are exceptions to that rule but to ignore it completely is pure stupid.

You classify people in groups because they congregate in those groups with a common mind of thought. Which if you actually think about it that proves why profiling actually works. When the profile no longer fits we may be able to achieve your fantasy of ignoring it. Until then not profiling is the worst thing we could be doing.

Stereotyping, despite its obvious pitfalls, is based upon our experiences. For example, do you know where they get the stereotype of a black guy who fathers kids then takes a walk? They get it from repeatedly seeing black guys fathering kids and then taking a walk. Do all black men do this? Of course not. Do a significant number of black men do this? Yes.? Thus, we have the stereotype of black men being absent fathers.

You will find a lot of truth in stereotyping.

Stereotyping is just another tool to keep people divided.
If you are going to cross at a crosswalk and you see a car rapidly approaching the crosswalk, don't pay any attention to that car. Don't prejudge, don't stereotype. You know the law and so does the car driver - the car must stop at all crosswalks to allow pedestrians to cross. Ignore what you know about stopping distances and speed - remember, don't prejudge that speeding car by using GENERAL information. You don't know how powerful the brakes are on the car, you don't know the driver's intentions, you don't know anything particular, so don't judge.

Similarly, when you're delivering papers on your paper route, don't be prejudiced against barking dogs. Don't stereotype the dog as being likely to bite you because he's barking and foaming at the mouth. Treat that dog like he was a docile dog. Don't prejudge him to be a danger.
