Egypt election turns US policy on its head - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON (AP) — The election of an Islamist president in Egypt is turning longstanding U.S. policy in the Mideast inside out: The Obama administration is relieved that the candidate representing three decades of close partnership with the United States lost.

The United States is now set to embrace a religious-based former opposition leader who does not share many U.S. goals, perhaps including the 30-year peace with Israel upon which U.S. policy in the region is based. The embrace won't be warm, and for the administration it will come with strings attached.

Still, the administration is calling the election of Mohammed Morsi on Sunday a milestone in the transition to democracy.

Morsi was popularly elected, and the freedom of the election is more important than who won it, U.S. officials said.

"We look forward to working together with President-elect Morsi and the government he forms to advance the many shared interests between Egypt and the United States," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday. "We judge individuals and parties that are elected in a democratic process by their actions, not by their religious affiliation."

The question remains: will morsi govern a free country or will he shoot himself in the foot?

I think that the power to the people will bring a stronger peace with Israel only if she allows the creation of a real Palestinian State and shares Jerusalem. Without that formula, the status-quo will turn ugly.

"The real palestinian state" is, of course, a non-viable bullshit. All their achievements since 1994 equal exactly a pile of manure. The international community should be busying itself with a humanitarian transfer of palistanians someplace else, instead.

I really find it incredible that right wing Zionists don't see the "handwriting on the Wall: The nascent democracies emerging in the middle east are going to be more powerful Economically, Politically, and Militarily...

Egypt’s Morsi has already let it be known that he wants to forge a ME alliance with Iran to form a more equal military parity...I'm sure that the evolving alliances will do the same.

They are not happy with US/Israeli homogeny and they will try to replace it...

The handwriting is this...Make peace for a viable and honorable peace with the Palestinians or the undeclared War of Attrition will go into full swing and America is not going to fight for you.

Democracies who have the Will of the people behind them are stronger Militarily because a cause is always stronger than the General’s bark!

Sounds as if nobody in "Palestine" wants a free state. It could be hazardous to their health.

From your link:

But that assessment fails to take two important factors into account:

In anything resembling a democratic setting, the "Arab street" will elect to power the movement that appears strongest and most capable of inflicting damage on perceived enemies. That is why Hamas stunned the world by winning the last Palestinian election so handily. It would likely do so again in a newly-established Palestinian state.

Were Hamas denied the right to exercise its democratically-won powers in a new Palestinian state, it would simply seize control by force of arms, as it did in Gaza, barring, of course, major military intervention by Israel or Western powers, which would be unlikely.

Some will try to counter the above by insisting that being made the head of a real state would force Hamas to behave in a more diplomatic and pragmatic manner. The same failed argument was made when Hamas won its coup in Gaza.

Was it an election? Was it a force of arms? Was it a coup?

How can you take these clowns seriously when they can't decide how Hamas came to power?

The AIPAC friendly mass media has been drumming up support for a US destruction of Iran's nuke sites, however when the internet has conuter balanced its monopoly...Don'er foeget Tinmore the very parrots who instigated an attack on Iraq are still shilling...

Americans are getting tired of these foreign wars and her only interts are the oil routes to Europe our Ward Economicaly.

If Israel dodes not make a satisfactory peace deal soon, she will see the ME coalese into a Islamic unity and the sampson option will become obsolete. What Israel needs to do is bring Hamas into the talks...A real peace deal that would satisfy Israel's many enemies needs all siganatries.

Clueless arabists of both denominations abide in alternate reality.
