Pay for the military

Much has been made by those on the right here on USMB, about supposed lefties who are either down and out or are living paycheck to paycheck, and of course what a bad thing this is, and how only those on the left, who RELY on the Federal government for their very being, would live such a life.

With this in mind, why was so much made about how the Federal government shutdown would hurt military families and how such a shut dwon could make military families destitute and possibly lose their homes, etc. Are military families lefties? All of them? Really?

If your point is that the military is sucking the life out of our economy, I'm 100% on board with that sentiment.

I don't blame the military personnel for that, of course.

But I do get rather tired of people who are NOT players in the capitalist economy (the military is pure socialist) waxing poetic about how much they LOVE capitalism.

These boys live in a social workers paradise and yet they have the unmitigate gall to lecutre the rest of us about how good capitalism works.

If they love this perverted form of capitalism we are currently enjoying so damned much, they ought to try to living with it.

I mean how many recruits going into boot camp today do you think could find a job in the civilian sector that pays nearly so well?

Not 10% of them, kids.

Starting salaries in the military are very generous given the lack of skills these boys are taking into the service with them.

Yea, thats why the military offered people in my career field up to $60,000 in bonus money if they re-enlisted.

Key word in your statement "RE-enlisted"

As in they have been trained and now have a marketable skill set.

He was talking about people entering BMT.

Strawman. When has "the right" ever said only lefties that depend on the government live paycheck by paycheck? I know plenty of people that live paycheck by paycheck. Some have high paying jobs, some have low paying jobs, none live off government handouts.

If you can't figure out on your own why "so much" was made out of the possibility that military would not get paid, then there is no use in even trying to explain it to you.

His arguement was that people in the military are living in "social paradise" and couldn't hack it in the real capitalism.

Yes, kids just entering the military right out of high school wouldn't be able to find high paying jobs because they don't have any skills. That is stating the obvious. He is acting like the recruits are thumping their chest about how great capitalism is, "lecturing the rest of us". Sounds like another strawman arguement.

Ask anyone in the military how many nights they spent on duty.

My last duty station before retirement I spent the first 90 days (nights) attending the instructors course. We reported to our class at 8 PM. We went home the following morning at 6 AM.

Yes the military trains 24/7

Do you think maybe a war stops at 5PM every day? Maybe we can meet up with the enemy on Saturday afternoon for a quick 9 holes?

Wake up dumb ass.

Its hard for people with no Military experience to grasp this, I have had people ask me if the Military paid overtime and if you could call in sick.

Our commander at my last base called in a female Airman off of sick leave to outprocess someone, it was illegal according to regs but he still did it.

I guess I was just one of those lucky ones. During my service I was never once placed on quarters (stay home) nor did I spend a day in the hospital. I was given 3 day3 administrative leave once because my wife had cut her hand really bad and couldn't take care of the kids. I thought that was strange.

From my experience alot of this is at the descretion of the supervisor, one of my best supervisors had a policy where if you need to be at home for more than 1 day you need to report to sick call, that seemed like a good policy but he actually trusted his troops.

Both times I had a serious flu. Prolly not a good idea to keep me around the shop like that.

I got put on administrative leave for a week once to testify in an attempted murder case in MA.

Good lord, if that happened to me at Vandenberg those Nazis would have placed ME under investigation, I was put under investigation because of a suspicious song on my Myspace page.:doubt:

The leadership at Pope was pretty cool, man. I put in for regular leave for it but when my Commander found out what it was for he called me into his office just to make sure everything was ok with me then he changed it to admin leave. Cool guy for a Yankee fan.

I was deployed with a bunch of people from Pope, didn't sound like a bad place, how long were you there?

A lil' over three years. I stuck around NC and lived in Raleigh for another year or so after I got out.

Thats a decent area I don't blame you for sticking around, after I separated from Vandenberg I got the the fuck out as soon as possible because the local area didn't have jackshit.

In the Army, only a Doctor could tell you that you were too sick to work. I once drove myself to the hospital and couldn't remember why. They finally determined I had OD'd on cold pills. Sent me back to duty after about 2 hours of doing nothing...

If you wanted to be out sick, you had to go to sick call...there they seemed to have the "disease of the week club"...didn't matter what symptoms you had, you were said to have "disease X".

I think technically it is that way in the Air Force too but alot of the times the supervisor will just send you home because you can spend all day in sick call, I went to sick call once at 0700 and I didn't get seen until 1200 PM, and than didn't leave until 1530, by which point the duty day was almost over anyways.

Most of the NCO's at Bragg went to the NCO club on Pope. It was such a better club...

I was lucky and had close family in the area. My cousin who is ten years older than me and like a big brother happens to live not far from the base.
