Wouldn't an informed patriotism be based on an honest evaluation of our flaws in our history?

Oh, wait, we can't talk about Slavery or hte Trail of Tears or the Internment of Japanese Americans or McCarthyism because those things don't put us in a good light.

The problem was not what Horton did , it was that his image was used - scary black man - to scare white folks into thinking Dukakis had something to do with the policy that let him out. Quite the contrary, the Furlough Program was signed into law by his predecessor (a Republican) and a republican judge was the one who decided that it could apply to lifers like Horton instead of the people transitioning back into the real world.
