I know this is not a current news event but I am still upset about this. I really believe we lost freedoms with this. I don’t have money but the fact that transactions can be monitored and one must use federal forms to move more than 10,000.00, well it isn’t right. Also the government can listen to phone conversations and view emails without a warrant – wow

This still pisses me off – does anyone else feel this way or am I just ‘big talking’

Oh…ahhh… just one more thing:
There is nothing patriotic about the patriot act!

Transfer a smaller amount and the government still held it awhile.

wow ! how refreshing you are !

you should have grave concerns for any "chiping away" of your "capatalist" rights that you are guaranteed as an "american citizen". this is why the idea of eighteen thousand more i.r.s. agents is disconcerting to most conservatives. this can't be good. we are en route to the farm (communism). luckily pelosi is gone. obama and reid will succumb relatively soon. this is the will of the majority of voters.
liberals distill "civil rights" and use them capriciously.
watch the movie "metropolis". i am currently working on a piece called "barrak, nancy and the imperial u.s. government", for my blog. liberals will try to twist the words of lincoln, and washington, franklin and adams and jefferson, to try to make them sound socialist, believe me, they were not.

national security from terrorism is a different story.

i find your approach to be delightful ! welcome to the club, i "rep" you

The fact that they had to sell it as "Patriot Act" should have tipped you off

Doesn't matter....it is still a surrender of our personal freedoms. It was passed during post 9-11 hysteria and cooler heads should have prevailed by now

Democrats disagree with you and have passed it every time it came up for renewal so much for your claim that Democrats are cooler heads.

Just like the republicans have, but not as vigirously as the right did.
Both sides suck on this. The dems mainly for giving into fear. both fear of terrorism and fear of losing votes. And the right for cheerleading it and fearmongering.

ALL of you want to know what is creepiest fact of all regarding the Patriot Act, that evil piece of legislation that, as you said, passed during post 9-11 hysteria?

IT WAS WRITTEN BY JOE BIDEN.............................IN 1995. 100% FACT, LOOK IT UP.

Take that for what it's worth, and analyze it how you may. But it was written by Joe Biden, 7 yeard BEFORE the 9-11 attacks.

A Democrat wrote the Patriot Act, Joe Biden, in 1995.

Even if true it excuses none who supported this.

It is true. It was drafted in Feb of 1995 by Joe Biden. It was called the Omnibus Anti-Terror Act. It was basically the frame for what would later pass as the Patriot Act. After 9-11, they couldn't pass what Biden wrote by the same name, because people would say "What tha fuck, this was written in 1995" so they put a new label on it and it passed.

Now, I'm in no way saying the gov't had anything to do with 9-11. I'm saying the gov't had this bill in hand before 9-11, and wanted to pass it but knew they couldnt. Then 9-11 happened.

Kind of how a quarterback sees a WR uncovered and throws it. They just took advantage of the situation that came up.

Thats why us on the right now believe Bush was in fact a RHINO liberal in many ways. He had us fooled. Just like Obama has the left fooled now.

Thats why the Tea Party is trying to root out the cancer in the Republican Party, and doing quite well. The left needs a similar group to root out the radicals on their side.

Not asingle right was effected. Proven by the fact when I ask for evidence that any where none of you can provide any.

Go ahead name a single American that was denied their rights without due process under the Patriot act.

Gunny, as a former law enforcement officer, I too see the value the Patriot Act can have. Especially with terrorism, the cops would sometimes not have time to obtain a warrant to do a wiretap or search. I remember in my old days working the road, it could take up to 24-48 hours just to get a proper search warrant for a simple drug dealer's house. And that was on a weekday. If it's midnight, and you gotta wake up a judge, or God-forbid on a holiday (like we saw in Portland yesterday) then getting a warrant could be very time consuming.

And with terrorism, time could be short. So if the FBI or locals got a tip of an imminent threat, they may not have time to get a warrant. So I can see why this act was needed to outline the situations where they could do it without one. The Patriot Act is basically an extension or footnote on the 4th amendment, done without having a Constitutional Convention necessary to amend that document.

But, on the other hand, I have little trust for the Federal Government at the legislative branch. The FBI, CIA, DEA, ATF and military, they have a lot more honor than politicians and I trust them a lot more. Nearly 100% of FBI, CIA, etc, are former cops anyway. BUT.....I can't wrap my mind around how and why the Patriot Act was written in 1995, 7 years before 9-11. In Feb of 1995, 2 and 1/2 months before Oklahoma City also.
