Well, not really. Here is a run-down on who holds the U.S. public debt -- that is, who the government owes the money to.

The total public debt is over 14 trillion.

Of that, the single biggest holder is the U.S. government itself. Various branches of the government hold $5.345 trillion, over a third of the total.

The second largest holder (although since this is an aggregate category it may be a little misleading) is private U.S. citizen investors in savings bonds and similar instruments. This totals $1.66 trillion.

China is number three: $868.4 billion. That's around six percent of the total debt. Japan, which holds $836.6 million, is number four and almost as big a lender as China.

Next we come back to the U.S. and cite mutual funds as no. five: $648.6 billion. Then pension funds at $643.8 billion, then state and local governments at $534.7 billion. The UK is next at . . .

Well, you get the idea. China does hold a chunk of the U.S. public debt but it's wild hyperbole to say that it holds all or most of it. Actually, most of the debt is held by Americans -- the U.S. government, state and local governments, mutual funds, pension funds, and private investors.

China is the biggest single foreign holder of our national debt. But that's sort of like saying that Fox News is the most-watched cable news outlet. It's sort of like being the tallest midget or the skinniest Sumo wrestler. The financial danger of China "calling" the U.S. debt is -- well, pretty much nonexistent.

America will be for those who are Americans what they want it to be. I actually read one of his books. It was "Where the Right Went Wrong: How Neoconservatives Subverted the Reagan Revolution and Hijacked the Bush Presidency"

While it had some valid points, the book was kind of all over the place. The first half was a heavy criticism of neoconservatives. The second half of the book was basically a long history lesson.

I must say that I was surprised that a former speech writer and author like Buchanan would misspell affect several times (he used the noun, effect, incorrectly on several occasions.
