John Shalikashvili was the Chairman of the JCS, the only foreign born person ever to hold that position. His father Dimitri had been an officer in the Czar's army in the early 20th century, and later during WWII was in germany's waffen SS.

Unspectacular career as an artillery officer in peacetime and a paper pusher in VietNam. Just the kind of general Clinton would want as COS.

What the hell would you know about a fine military career, idiot?

Obama screwed Petraeus out of his spot unfortunately.

I don't want to take away from the guy's legacy. He served honorably and was a good soldier. I'm surprised the CIA didn't use his language skills during the Cold War and maybe they did. Clinton had a strange relationship with the Military and he probably thought it was amusing to appoint a Russian born general with a heavy accent to be COS. Petraeus was used as a a punching bag by liberal democrats. It's strange that he would be appointed as CIA director. Maybe to shut him up.

Powell was worse than a lapdog - he had a very bad career, marked by incompetence. He came up of course by "affirmative action". He was sort of the obama of the military. His last mistake in public was as secretary of state, taking fake "evidence" of WMDs to the UN security council. Now, how many men would make such claims before at least driving over to the CIA, and saying "big claims need big proof - convince me"? Not powell, he zipped over to the UN and made a fool of himself, a fitting end for a guy who should have retired as a sergeant.

Ever see a general without a bunch of medals? They give them to generals like C-Rations. Look up his record. He was an artillery officer in peace time and a paper pusher in VietNam.
