But Liberals could be the majority soon. As could republicans. Both can do damage to the rights of others if unchecked.

The constitution is only a piece of paper without the framework it provides in the form of three branches, with checks balances. Without checks and balances we become a pure democracy, which will never protect rights, and always rule in the majority.

What the OP fails to realize is that the United States is a Constitutional Republic; its people are subject only to the rule of law, not men, as men are incapable of ruling justly.

Constitutional case law provides the boundaries and restrictions with regard to one exercising his inalienable rights and the government’s use of power.

Assuming the Federal court system would still be in place in a ‘direct democracy’ system, it would be madness to eliminate our current representative democracy where in theory matters of importance are given consideration before passage and enactment, and measures examined for constitutionality before becoming law.

With ‘direct democracy,’ the Federal courts would be overwhelmed with lawsuits emanating from citizens who believed their civil rights were violated by some ill-considered and capricious referendum. The courts would obviously come to a grinding halt.

There is nothing wrong with our current system, there’s frankly nothing better to replace it.

It’s incumbent upon we the people to use the system wisely, and as intended; not as a venue to accommodate hyper-partisan combat.

Other than that debate, usually no one wants to touch the constitution. It has worked for quite some time. I think what might be breaking down is our ability to agree on anything. It seems the right and the left are far apart on many issues, I have my slant and I wont divulge it here, and I'm sure liberals feel I'm destoying this country too. There is a divide, and that divide makes it difficult for anything to get accomplished.

Your 100% right we as a country are too divided and we have been for a really long time I thought naively that Pres Obama would help this country come together being the first black POTUS.

But, after four years this country is so divided that even if you say for example I don't think we should continue with the drug war and your labeled as a drugged out hippie that whats kids to get on dope.

It's stuff like that is why this country is falling apart man its fucking tragic.

There are always groupings of people based on wants and needs. Age, sex, race, education, occupation, geography.....all put you into one group or another

A 70 year old does not have the same needs as a 20 year old. If 20 year olds outnumber 70 year olds you do not want a society focused solely on low cost education vs low cost medical care.
