Palestinian Olympians Ready to Make History in the Pool

The clock is counting down to the greatest show on earth, with less than a year before the Summer Olympic Games in London. Palestinian athletes are training hard in pursuit of the qualifying times that could take them to the oldest and most famous festival of sporting competition.

At the previous Games in Beijing 2008, Gazan long-distance runner Nader Al-Masri carried the flag for Palestine; finishing 38th in the 5000m event. Al-Masri has subsequently built on that achievement, winning the inaugural Gaza marathon this year and competing internationally. He will arrive in London confident of success.

But there are exciting youth prospects too, most notably Sabine Hazboun, a 17-year-old girl from Bethlehem who is already a champion swimmer with the potential to make much bigger waves.

Hazboun has been representing Palestine on the world stage since she was just 13, by which time she had already won the national championship and been marked as an outstanding prospect for her command of all four strokes. Since then she has competed at prestigious international events, including the 2010 Youth Olympics and the 2011 FINA World Championships, where she was the only Palestinian to compete.

Along with fellow swimmer Yara Dawani, 19, Sabine has been training at the High Performance Centre in Barcelona, Spain. They are there as part of the Olympic Solidarity Programme, which supports athletes from disadvantageous circumstances.

Palestinian athletes, and swimmers in particular, are handicapped by a lack of facilities. “You can’t find specialist coaching for professionals,” remarks Sabine, who, while in her home country, has been limited to the use of a small, overcrowded pool in Bethlehem - light years away from the cavernous 50m amphitheatres that she is used to competing in.

Actually South Africa has the most serial killers not counting the ones who haven't been caught yet. The reason iran doesn't have many serial killers is because alot of ways to murder are legal there and actually enforced by the government.

Relax junior, the murder rate is higher in quite a few third world shit holes than the US but they don't keep anything on record.

i'm totally relaed. i'm not worried about serial killers, and i am certainly not worried about young women athletes like some of you seem to be.

hell, i'm not even worried about the 300 lb. dude living in the apartment above me who thinks he can lose some weight by exercising on one of those indoor trampolines. i mean, the floors have really begin to creak, even when his cat walks across it now and my ceiling is beginning to buckle...but i am a lucky guy and have cheated death before. i gotta figure ol' dr. phil has gotta be bringing in some heavy machinery to rescue him any day now.

well, i'm not sure if that's true...

seems like every nationality...ethnicity, race, gender, creed, and all the good stuff...has some kind of rep or another around the world or block. the irish are drunks, black folk are lazy, women are weak, jews are shifty, mormons are polygamists, americans are arrogant and rude. maybe some reps even have some sort of vakidity in some obscure sort of way, are culturally based...but whether they do or not, there is no need to act as though every person in the group adheres to the rep. that's called bigotry.

what do i want from you? maybe you woke up on the wrong side of the bed but basically, and there is no easy way to put it, but it would be nice if you would stop acting like a bigot, or supporting some tough guy/girl like tjvh, who made the stupid remark about suicide bombers in the first place. i think there really has to be something wrong about an adult (i assume he/she is an adult...i checked their profile) trash talking a kid, a young woman whose only fault was her place and circumstance of birth.

Palestinian Olympic tradition:

Black September and the Murder of 11 Israelis at the 1972 Munich Olympics

Palestinian Terrorism and Olympic Shame

From Pierre Tristam, former About.com Guide

At 4:30 a.m. local time on Sept. 5, 1972, in Munich, Germany, Palestinian commandos armed with automatic rifles broke into the quarters of the Israeli team at the Olympic Village, killed two members of the team and took nine others hostage. Twenty-three hours later, the nine hostages had also been murdered. So was a German policeman. So were five of the Palestinian terrorists.

The 1972 massacre is by far the worst case of violence in Olympic history since the modern games began in 1896, and one of the most notorious cases of terrorism on record.

Palestinians mutilated Israeli athlete in 1972 Olympic raid
Dec 2,`15 -- The wife of one of 11 Israeli Olympians killed by Palestinian gunmen at the 1972 Munich Games has disclosed new details of her husband's final moments, saying that his body was mutilated by his captors.
After years of remaining silent, Ilana Romano said Wednesday that photos she obtained from Germany in 1992 showed that the body of her husband, weightlifter Yossef Romano, known by his nickname Yossi, was mutilated after he was shot while trying to resist the attackers. She said the Palestinian attackers had beaten up other athletes and forced them to watch her husband die while refusing to allow doctors into the room. "Some said the Palestinian terrorists were freedom fighters. Not only were they not freedom fighters, they were cruel," she said. The Munich Olympic Games were meant to right a historical wrong. They were the first held in Germany since the 1936 Berlin Olympics, which were tainted by Nazism.

But before dawn on Sept. 5, 1972, eight members of Palestinian armed group Black September climbed over the unguarded fence of the Olympic village, burst into the building where the Israeli team was staying and took the athletes hostage. Five athletes, six coaches and a West German policeman were killed at the village or during a botched rescue attempt. The Palestinian attackers had demanded the release of prisoners held by Israel and two German left-wing extremists in German jails. Romano said that she and Ankie Spitzer, whose husband Andre, a fencing coach, was also killed, petitioned the West German government in the years after the attack for more details but were rebuffed.

In this Sept. 5, 1972, file photo, a Palestinian gunman looks from an apartment in which were seized members of the Israeli Olympic Team at their quarters at the Munich Olympic Village. The wife of one of 11 Israeli Olympians killed by Palestinian gunmen at the 1972 Munich Games lana Romano said Wednesday that photos she obtained from Germany in 1992 showed that the body of her husband, weightlifter Yossi Romano, was mutilated. She said the Palestinian attackers had beaten up other athletes and forced them to watch while keeping doctors out of the room.

She said she managed to obtain some German documents about the events from a person she said she could not identify to protect that person's privacy. The documents were later authenticated by a former agent from Israel's Mossad spy agency. Faced with the evidence, German authorities eventually conceded possessing information. In 1992, Ilana Romano's lawyer returned from Germany with photographs and documents, she said. The lawyer tried to persuade her not to look at the horrific images but she insisted. "I was shocked and traumatized when I saw them," she said. "Yossi was sprawled out on the floor and they were mutilating his body."

She declined to elaborate, saying it was too painful for her. But the New York Times, which first reported details of the abuse this week, said the Palestinians had castrated him, apparently after he had died. "I carried this trauma on my shoulders for so long. Seeing the photo that erased Yossi's smile and Yossi's dimples and to see a face in such pain was really difficult," she said.
