P-51 Mustang operations on aircraft carriers

Mustang - Documents Never used operationally from carriers, nevertheless, interest in a naval Mustang continued for several years. The need faded as jets with "longer legs" became available and dependable.

Research into this aircraft leads to a better understanding for the need to secure both Iwo Jima and Okinawa as it highlights the vast distances bombers had to travel over empty ocean to bomb Japan. The Navel version of the P-51 would have almost certainly become operational if those two objectives had not been realized.

I didn't think the P-51 could go slow enough for carrier landings, given it's wing shape and engine type. They didn't handle low altitudes well at all.

Great photos. Thanks for posting them, Tony.

A portion of the lower tail was removed in order to install a wind drag for landing as well as an cable line hook below that.
