conservatives are deliberately spreading lies and rumors to disparage the Obama administration to the detriment of dialogue
By Steve Ianelli
If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes politics.

In April of 2008, while the presidential election season was already in full swing, a surprising poll figure was released by the Pew Research Center: 10 percent of Americans believed that candidate Barack Obama was Muslim, with a full third of respondents admitting to not knowing his religious beliefs at all.

Among conservative Republicans, 16 percent stated that the president was of Muslim faith. Disregarding the absurdity of this figure coinciding with another 'scandal' being pushed by conservative candidates - that involving Obama's Christian preacher - this is a frighteningly high figure when the man had stated his beliefs outright on multiple occasions.

Now, a year and a half since the inauguration of Imam Hussein Obama, Time magazine has released a new figure: 46 percent of self-identified Republicans believe their president is a Muslim.

Add this to the fact that 41 percent of Republicans do not even believe their president was born in this country, and one starts to wonder where these people are getting their information.

This disregard for reality is not an anomaly in the American right; it is quickly becoming the norm. We saw it under the Bush administration with the Iraq War, when every major government official repeated the lie about weapons of mass destruction until it became dangerous to even question it (just ask Valerie Plame).

We saw it during election season 2004 and 2006 when the GOP convinced their voters that Democrats wanted terrorism to succeed. We saw it again in election season 2008 with the accusations of treason, terrorism, socialism, Marxism and the birther movement.

The technique is simple: you never actually have to say, "President Obama is a Muslim" or, "The President wants to destroy capitalism." You merely need Rush Limbaugh or Michelle Bachmann to raise the question.

It is not about making the statement - it is about raising the question. And once the idea takes hold, it spreads like wildfire.

The NYC 'mosque' (read: community center with a Muslim prayer space) is all the rage these days, as GOP candidates further the notion that this might be a terrorist recruiting center that could be funded by terror money and there may be a chance it represents a monument to victory.

Even the sciences are not safe from political 'debate'. In New Hamsphire, every GOP senate candidate is a global warming denier. In New Mexico - despite multiple forecasts of impending drought in the state - all GOP gubernatorial candidates are global warming deniers.

While the rest of the civilized world struggles to find a solution to the impending climate crisis, scientists in the United States still struggle to convince the populace that the problem even exists.

But as we have all seen, you don't need to make the statement - just plant the seed. Of course Michelle Obama isn't trying to force the country's children to only eat what she deems suitable.

But raise the question, and the damage is done. Obviously the Nuclear Security Summit logo was not designed to reflect Obama's Muslim faith.

But make the suggestion, and the damage is done. And you would have to be insane to think that Obama's healthcare logo really looks like a Nazi swastika. But photoshop the images together, and you get the point.

So who do we blame for the banner of misinformation that flies proudly above the GOP? No one would hesitate to point fingers at the people who start the lies - the Palins and Bachmanns and Limbaughs of politics and punditry. But where is the responsible leadership?

Michael Steele, punching bag for his own party, is one apology away from literally kissing Rush Limbaugh's ass. Newt Gingrich, a strong GOP contender for the 2012 presidential election, doesn't hesitate to repeat the lies surrounding the Muslim community center. Even John McCain, once touted as a moderate conservative, was reluctant to dismiss every factually devoid rumor that came his way in 2008.

And even more absurd than the lies peddled by the political right is the complete disinterest in countering them from the left.

As President Obama's approval rating holds steady even after multiple political victories, all Democrats can do is roll their eyes while the demagoguery takes hold.

The smear machine created by the right is crippling meaningful deliberation, and is impervious to reason.

Left leaning voters express a continued lack of interest in politics, with 62 percent of conservatives expressing 'a lot' of interest in the upcoming election and only 41 percent of liberals and moderates expressing similar concern.

I am happy to see the citizens of this country get involved in politics, and I am especially happy to see that the party out of power continues to fight for their beliefs. But where are they getting these ridiculous ideas? And why are their leaders and politicians not willing to fight for the truth?

Talk show hosts like Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly shamelessly and emotionally make assertions on issues ranging from Michelle Obama's leisure activiities to lies about the President's birth certificate.

How about an article dealing with the subject at hand instead of yet another lefty political diatribe. Is that really the best you are capable of?

We'll never know if this SECRET operation might have worked- its cover was blown. The Obama administration, except possbly Holder, didn't know about it. And I don't care what lyin' spinning Fox Noise and Issa have to say either...

Put your head back in the sand dickweed.

Do you have any proof that Obama or his staff allowed this?
Or maybe it as the idea of a Department of the US govt.
Obama does not run every agency of the govt. personally.

They all reort to him, as POTUS.

As POTUS, he is ultimately responsible for what goes on in his administration.

Yes he is responsible, but even Truman did not know about the atomic bomb until the military decided to use it.

Ignorance can be cured, stupid is forever!

"Of course using the articles of known left/right wing bloggers and authors as proof of fact is NOT pathetic."

Mine include documented facts. The RW ones are usually pure BS, all bluster, no factual evidence.

Documented facts?

Let me explain to you something...and this is just a made up scenario...but to make a point...

1) Story as it happened:
A man walks into a bar wearing a "pro life" shirt. Someone sitting at the bar calls him a name and threatens to kill him if he doesnt take the shirt off. He refuses and a fight breaks out. The one with the shirt fights him off and the guy is down on the ground...bleeding from the head. The police come and arrest both of the men....and the man that was bbleeding is in critical condition and in a coma.

2) Story as reported
Title of Article:
Anti abortionists puts man in critical condition

A pro life advocate walked into a bar and proceeded to fight with and seriously injure a pro choice advocate before police came and arrested him. Still in a coma, the other man is reported to be in a coma and in critical condition

Everything that was reported were 100% accurate facts.

But the enitre way it was reported was 100% misleading.

You seem to not understand the difference between facts that are applicable and facts that are meaningless without other data.

It was apparent when you posted that link regarding the Pew Study.

Every word you say is Fox/Rush/Pub BS, and provably so, to anyone but ignorant, brainwashed dittoheads:eusa_angel:

"Not a single country claimed that Bush cherry picked their intel."

France certainly did (in the most polite and diplomatic way), and they were stampeded by jingoist, demagogging "patriots" and loudmouth dittoheads in a rush to war. The rest of the world voted with their feet, not having anything to do with attackong Iraq. (except Blair, who was ruined).

This story is more pubspin from overwrought ignorami...Turn off the BS.:eusa_angel:

Like I said, ignorance can be cured, stupid is forever!

Non-US Forces in Iraq - February 2007
The size and capabilities of the Coalition forces involved in operations in Iraq has been a subject of much debate, confusion, and at times exageration. As of August 23, 2006, there were 21 non-U.S. military forces contributing armed forces to the Coalition in Iraq. These 21 countries were: Albania, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Poland, Romania, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.

However, in the August 23, 2006 Iraq Weekly Status Report (Slide 27) the State Department listed 27 foreign countries as contributing troops to the Coalition in Iraq. The additional four countries were Japan, Portugal, Singapore and the Ukraine.

In addition, that same Weekly Status Report listed 34 countries (including the US) as maintaining personnel in Iraq (as part of the Coalition, UNAMI, or NATO). The State Department reported that Fiji was contributing troops though UNAMI and that Hungary, Iceland, Slovenia, and Turkey were assisting with the NATO training mission. However, it is unclear whether Hungary actually maintained any forces in Iraq as part of NATO or UNAMI since its government announced the complete withdrawal of troops in December 2004.

The ATF reports to A/G Holder and the only two possibilities that I can see is that he did know about it and should be fired for approving it or he didn't know about it and should be fired for incompetence.

It appears the ATF director wasn't looking forward to being thrown under the bus so testified in secret before congress. It appear that Holder and Co. are in it up to their eyeballs.

"Top Republican lawmakers have authored an explosive new letter containing details of secret testimony by acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson, which reveal for the first time the extent to which his agency was involved in an international gun selling scandal.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, California Republican, and Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican, fired off the letter to Attorney General Eric Holder Tuesday detailing what Melson told Congressional investigators in a secret July 4 testimony.

One key takeaway from the meeting was that Melson acknowledged to investigators that agents had witnessed transfers of weapons from straw purchasers to third parties without following the guns afterwards. Straw purchasers are people who could technically legally buy guns in the U.S. but their intent was to turn around and sell them to drug cartels in Mexico.

Another point Melson clarified for investigators was that the ATF group carrying out the mission of Operation Fast and Furious was placed under the direction of the Arizona U.S. Attorney’s office. The U.S. Attorney in Arizona, Dennis Burke, is a political appointee of the Obama administration.

Melson appeared with only his personal attorney at the secret meeting with Congressional investigators. Melson was originally scheduled to conduct the interview on July 13 with Justice Department attorneys and his personal attorney present, but Melson abandoned DOJ representation after learning of a provision in his agreement to testify that allowed him to do so. (Issa staffer: Gunrunner investigation points much higher than ATF director)

“We are disappointed that no one had previously informed him of that provision of the agreement,” Issa and Grassley wrote to Holder on Tuesday afternoon. “Instead, Justice Department officials sought to limit and control his communications with Congress. This is yet another example of why direct communications with Congress are so important and are protected by law.”

Issa and Grassley wrote that Melson’s interview “was extremely helpful to our investigation.” They said Melson told them he did not review the “hundreds of documents” the DOJ is withholding until after the public controversy about the operation. Issa and Grassley said Melson claims he was “sick to his stomach” when he obtained the documents and learned the full story.

The DOJ has not been fully cooperative with a number of Issa’s and Grassley’s requests for documents and other evidence in this investigation. According to the July 5 letter, Issa and Grassley said Melson told them he asked the Office of the Deputy Attorney General (ODAG) to be more cooperative with Congressional requests for information, evidence and documents.

Their letter also details how Melson told Issa and Grassley that he and other senior ATF officials moved to reassign every major official involved in Operation Fast and Furious. Melson said Obama administration Justice Department officials directed him and other ATF officials to not communicate to Congress the reasoning behind the reassignments.

The ultimate point behind Issa’s and Grassley’s letter to Holder was to request Melson be provided with the protections that bureaucratic whistleblowers normally enjoy. Because Melson, a longtime career government employee, now serves as a political appointee of the Obama administration, he doesn’t automatically enjoy whistleblower protections.

In recent weeks, rumors have floated throughout the press that Melson was going to resign his post as acting ATF Director. Melson told Congressional investigators on July 4, though, that those reports were “untrue.”

“Technically, Mr. Melson no longer enjoys the due process protections afforded to career officials,” Issa and Grassley wrote. “Given his testimony, unless a permanent director is confirmed, it would be inappropriate for the Justice Department to take action against him that could have the effect of intimidating others who might want to provide additional information to the Committees.”

Melson also confirmed many suspicions Issa and Grassley had of the existence of documents and other evidence in Justice Department possession. The Republican members called on Holder to be more transparent and honest in responses to their requests for information, and that DOJ officials should be informed of their right to communicate with Congressional committees without Holder’s oversight.

“We hope that the Department will take a much more candid and forthcoming approach in addressing these very serious matters with the Committee,” Issa and Grassley wrote. “If other important fact witnesses like Mr. Melson have a desire to communicate directly with the Committees they should be informed that they are free to do so. They should also be notified that if they are represented by personal counsel, they may appear with personal counsel rather than with Department lawyers.”
