Opera House cancels speech by Hizb ut-Tahrir spokesman Uthman Badar on why ‘honour killings are morally justified’

A RADICAL Islamic spokesman has been stopped from delivering a speech defending honour killings at a cultural festival at The Sydney Opera House.
The event — part of the Festival of Dangerous Ideas — was slammed as a cheap stunt that could have put women’s lives at risk.

The furore comes days after Opera Australia sacked a soprano from performing at the Opera House after an anti-gay slur appeared on her Facebook page.

EDITORIAL: SYDNEY FESTIVAL’S IDEA WAS SIMPLY DISGUSTING

Federal and state MPs condemned the Opera House for its decision to host Hizb ut-Tahrir spokesman Uthman Badar in a speech titled “honour killings are morally justified”.

Honour killing involves murdering a woman who is considered to have shamed her family.

The speech, scheduled for August 30, was removed from the festival’s playlist last night following widespread outrage.

The state government is understood to have put pressure on the Opera House with NSW Arts Minister Troy Grant asking for an urgent explanation on why the event was scheduled.

Hysteria wins out. Opera house cancels my session at #FODI. Welcome to the free world, where freedom of expression is a cherished value.

Aw, seems Mr Badar is not a happy camper.
Yes, welcome to the free world indeed, where Aussie is free to lobby the govt men and women to have his/her will prevail.
Oh, and freedom downunder doesn't extend to murdering women [or anyone else for that matter].
Anyone not liking Aussie culture should really relocate to another land, to one where they'd be much happier.

He should have been allowed. Its the Festival For DANGEROUS ideas - the dangerous idea being that honor killings are justified. People need to learn that there are two sides to each story. He wasn't in favor of honor killings, he was simply there as part of a freaking festival at which people would speak about all manner of things.

He didn't even come up with the title of his speech - it was out of his control.

Well in Sydney Australia there are not two sides to that idea...and we're not having people saying in public that there are, at the Opera House or anywhere else.

As for Hizb ut-Tahrir...

Hizb ut-Tahrir extremists should be banned in Australia: Muslim leader

A MUSLIM leader has called for Hizb ut-Tahrir to be banned in Australia, as exasperatation within the community grows over the extremist group and its spokesman Uthman Badar for drawing Islam into another “stereotypical debate”.

The Australian understands that Mr Badar was has also been told to “stop talking about Australian fighters in Iraq and Syria” by the Sydney solicitor representing young men who have had their passports cancelled by ASIO because it is claimed he is “hurting their case”.

Things like this should be set up more carefully

For example if you bring in a panel to address a controversial topic,
bring two people from opposite extremes and 1 or 2 who are moderate in between

so this controversial position can be included with a set that counteracts it evenly
then it is clear not one position is being promoted and also
allows such people to interact with those of opposing views which is needed

In Australia, obviously, "honour killings" are non-negotiable...they're banned, illegal, a crime, murder.

Whatever people thought they could have a public debate about it were very seriously misguided.
