The UN does not make laws, does not dictate policy, and has never attempted to do either.

One thing that they do do is to monitor elections and make sure everything is free and fair. I don't know if the US really needs that monitoring, but if it helps reduce the number of legal challenges whch might follow a Florida-like ballot, maybe it is a good thing.

It also puzzles me that 90% of the whining I see about the UN come from people who don't seem to understand what it dos and doesn't do.

First off, the President had nothing to do with this.

Secondly, the group, The Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE), is only loosely affiliated with the UN.

Finally, the OSCE has had monitors present to observe every national U.S. election for the past decade. Reports have been issued by monitors for the midterm elections in 2002, 2006, and 2010, as well as the Presidential elections of 2004 and 2008.

In television interviews, Abbott denounced the OSCE as an interfering foreign body even though the US is a founding member and it was invited by President George Bush's administration to monitor the 2004 and 2008 presidential elections in the US.

So we have the US sending monitors around the world and Bush inviting monitors for previous elections but the idiot right wing here saying "Only under Obama".
