Excessive Force, that line that the cops aren't supposed to cross, is an expensive line. Not for the cop, he doesn't pay anything. The city on the other hand, they get to fork over tons of money.

Three million dollars to one person, another half million to another, and almost four hundred thousand to a third. All because of the same fine cop out there just doing his job. Or sometime.

Now, some people like to claim that cops can't get the equipment and training they need. Well, how does the city afford a couple dozen police cars when the cash is going to the victims of the police? Where is the city supposed to get the money when it goes out the door to pay off victims of police brutality faster than it can be raised? Three million dollars. The victim is in law school now, paid for by you the citizens of Atlantic City, and the people who visit the city. Just imagine his closing arguments as he points to the scars on his head and neck and tells the Jury of his personal experience with the police.

Just think about how much money the city could have saved if they had fired this idiot cop after the first incident of brutality, or perhaps the second incident. They could have saved at least $3 Million bucks. But instead, they wanted that fine jackass out on the street costing them a ton of cash. Works for me. Later we'll hear how the damned Liberals were all responsible because they hate cops, or something. The funny thing is that the Liberals did not fire that asshole either.

He was awarded the money because the prosecutors office failed to sign-off on his admission to the pretrial intervention program which without he cannot be admitted to the bar.

ie; the guy is a violent criminal and can now be a lawyer. Just what we need?

It probably comes from insurance....you'd think the police depts would insure themselves to protect themselves from these kind of suits??? :dunno:

The case will go to appeal... guaranteed. A lot of lawyers will make money.

This shit is the norm in Democrat-controlled cities.

Nope. But.

Police department shuts down after settling lawsuits against 2 officers

Insurance goes up after payouts. Just like your car insurance goes up after accidents and tickets, and DUI.
Unless a city self-insures, as many do.

But even then there is a limit to how much they can afford. Cities can’t print money either. I suppose they could do a bond. That way they could raise money to fund the legal payouts to victims of the police.

More likely the City's Corporation Counsel will estimate the cost of appeals, along with the risk of a higher award being issued (which can happen) if the case is re-opened, and offer a compensatory settlement. Because the awardee risks reversal or significant reduction of award if the appeal is successful, and because these appeal processes very often are drawn out for years, settlement offers are usually accepted -- especially if the awardee is not "financially comfortable."

The majority of substantial awards in these police misconduct cases end up as settlements. But these misconduct awards cost taxpayers enormous sums of money every year.
