It is a food voucher or now a card.

So why do you get that ? Unemployment ?

It's for people who make under a certain amount of income with a certain number of dependents. Over 30% in our country who collect them are working or have a spouse working. You get a card with a certain amount of $$ on it each month to use for buying food.

Right. They use their own money to buy a Mercedes, 72" flat screen TV, smart phone, liquor and dinner at Outback.

Oh horseshit. If you know of someone actually doing that, TURN THEM IN for chrissakes and shut up.

Oh, but I have and I get a kick out from seeing their Mercerdes being hauled off. Done it 3 times the past year.

Ah right. We have help for working people on low pay. Its called the working tax credit and is paid in your wages. There was some talk of it being paid in vouchers of some sort but it was considered to be demeaning.

The truth of it is that this payment is a way that the taxpayer subsidises the corporations in order for them to get away with paying starvation wages.

Scrounging is ok if it is one at a corporate level.

Tommy, we don't like to see people suffer or go hungry and we understand and approve of public assistance where it's needed. The problem is that there is a culture in America where 3 or 4 generations of a family have been on welfare and aid programs and the next generation not yet born will grow up the same way. These people have never worked and refuse to work, even if you gave them jobs. The liberal party has enabled and protected these people for years and years and will deny they do it to make people dependent and to vote for them every year to stay in power. And because we taxpayers are fed up with these leeches, the liberal party heaps scorn on us and says we hate poor people. I could write a book about this mess but then, many books have been written

I hear the same thing over here. In the UK benefits fraud is a fraction of the tax fraud bill. But it is more visible and people think they can see whats going on.
This is backed up by a media keen to stigmatise people. There is a whole tv sub genre around this now. "On benefits and..."

Its not good when people cheat the system but ,certainly over here, the numbers are grossly exaggerated.

Unemployment, disabled, dependent children. A number of reasons.

We don't starve people. But we'd like those who are capable to at least put forth the effort to contribute to their own existence.

We have a range of things that are similar. Unemployment benefit and job seekers allowance. One is based on previous contributions and you need to have made an amount of national insurance contributions to get it.Basically you are allowed a semblance of dignity and given a chance to find work that is suited to your skills.
The other is a subsistence allowance for those who havent paid in. That is a lot more rigorous and you basically have to take whatever you are offered. I dont think that is unreasonable for a healthy adult.
There is also sickness benefit for those unable to work. This is a cause of much concern in the UK. The government have outsourced the management of this and they are bonussed in declining applications. The number of suicides related to this process is now in the thousands and it is a national scandal.
The right wing press obsess about "scroungers" but the truth of it is that the money paid out here is a fraction of the amount of money lost to tax dodging corporations. Not least the right wing press who are all tax dodgers.

But welfare "dole" is quite complicated over here and I couldnt pretend to know all the answers.

PS - There is a film out called "I Daniel Blake" which gives a reasonably accurate account of the way sick benefit is now managed in the UK. Its heartbreaking stuff.

Seems as if we have the same concerns here when it comes to putting the money out and having a middle man take his cut before doling out the benefits.

Basically this company will buy your life insurance policy off you for a lump sum which you can then use to pay for your cancer treatment.

The company was called Coventree Trust or something similar.

Is there no treatment available for cancer sufferers ?

You do know that Obamacare is still the law of the land, for now?

A few companies over here have gotten in trouble for life settlements.
You agree on a certain amount, it's not it's face value, they give you the money and in return, you make them the beneficiary. Might or might not be a good deal for you, something you and your heirs to decide. Most life insurers will already advance a good portion of your life as living benefits if you're terminal.
