On International Women's Day, Congress Debates Measure To Limit Reproductive Rights

By Laura Bassett

WASHINGTON -- Thursday, March 8 is International Women's Day, and Republicans in Congress are celebrating by debating a new bill that would restrict abortion rights.

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution held a hearing on Thursday to discuss the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA), which is sponsored by two Florida Republicans, Marco Rubio in the Senate and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in the House. The bill would make it illegal for anyone but a parent to accompany a young woman across state lines to seek an abortion -- even if her parents are absent or abusive.

Perhaps more significantly, the bill is the latest in a long series of attempts by Republican lawmakers to criminalize physicians who perform abortions, to chip away at women's constitutionally protected right to decide when and if they will have a child and to otherwise politicize women's health.

Reproduction does not have rights, people have rights.

There is no Constitutionally protected right for a woman to kill her unborn or recently born child.

Glad to see the GOP had enough balls to do this on "International Right to Kill Babies Day".

And no, we don't expect piece of shit moral cowards like the Democrats to understand.

I'm not a woman, but the Republican war on women really pisses me off. And what pisses me off even more is the MEN who want to determine/legislate/restrict female health care and reproductive rights.

Like you give a shit about women..If you did you wouldn't push so hard for abortions

Roe v. Wade gives that legal choice to women, but the Medieval Republicans don't like that law, so they try to chip it away through back doors.

Its not a law, you jackass.

Dems are far too scared to actually allow any legislation on abortion come up to vote.

Just look at the partial birth abortion ban. Dems fought that tooth and nail, and yet it passed through Congress, as well as with the support of the vast majority of Americans.

It may not be "a" law - but it is law:

Rubio is just another big-government authoritarian conservative; this legislation is unneeded and inane.

Meanwhile the do-nothing House and Senate republicans continue to refuse to address real issues, such as jobs and the economy.

what difference? they both accomplished the DEATH of their babies...
which you gleefully support

I suggest you compare the history/statistics of abortions before and after Roe v. Wade.

I suggest you go have one then you can come back an crow about how much you care for all the women rights to kill their children

Weird how much you care about a fetus, but not about women and not about babies once they are born.
