Old White Liberals Stuck in the 60s

Perhaps no individual personifies the old white liberal stuck in the 60s more than Chris Matthews. In a recent debate with Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican Party and a man who happens to be black, Matthews referred to the GOP as the “grand wizard crowd” (that is grand wizard as in head of the Ku Klux Klan). He also likes to cast judgment on blacks who, in his eyes, are not black enough....

The entire premise is based on 3 words uttered by Mathews - with zero context. (And the funny thing is > I agree that the Left has failed to evolve past the sixties; the Liberal Class has died. There is not nobody making the case for saving the middle class against the concentration of wealth at the top. The Left failed its essential task > to show the country how private sector wealth owns government and media. They have failed their other task: to show that the problem isn't hand outs to the poor, but subsidies and bailouts to the dynastic monopolies calcifying around politics/media/economy. The Left doesn't know how to point to the fact that the middle class went from wage-based consumption to credit-based consumption, which meant their consumption for 30 years came with interest payments (DEBT) to the wealthy - a situation that would eventually explode once the consumer was finally too bankrupt to spend. The Left let the Right create a distribution system that replaced waged/benefits with credit cards - and they did nothing. The Left has failed miserably to counter the Right since Reagan convinced the nation to concentrate more wealth & political power on top, none of which trickled down to consumers but actually trickled into the pockets of politicians so they would liberalize trade laws, freeing capital to ditch American labor for sweatshop labor. The Left, by not supporting Labor, is dead. Chris Mathews is mere refuse on the margins, spewing garbage)

So yes, of course Mathews is lame - and may be guilty of the charges made - but the article doesn't support its claims, and by being so negligent, it promotes the exact kind of illiteracy that seduced the OP into taking it seriously. Indeed a far stronger case could be made against Mathews if the author was writing in a more rigorous environment (where he would need more evidence than Mathews uttering 3 words). Seriously, Mathews is probably worse than the author states on a host of issues, but the author makes no attempt to rise about the standard brain-dead "hit job".

The reason the Rightwing created such a powerful think tank system (starting in the 70s), was because they wanted to insulate their work from a peer reviewed context, like say a scientific environments where stuff gets pulled apart and analyzed line by line. The Right wanted an environment where they could tie Saddam to Osama without empirical or historical data getting in the way. They want to be able to claim Obama is from Mars, or that he is a Muslim double agent. They wanted an environment where facts and conclusions were not held to objective standards but to political goals - and they found an audience ignorant and desperate enough to buy into it. The OP actually takes this kind of stuff seriously because he doesn't need carefully argued conclusions. The OP actually gets political and historical information from entertainers like Limbaugh and Hannity.

Which is sot say: the GOP has created a hermetically sealed environment where facts don't have to be supported. The Left is no better; they just lack the business funding to create such a powerful think tank/media presence.

The article cited by the OP is aimed at people with little to know advanced education. It's from an author who is repeating the same old garbage to the same old sub-literate audience. The website is a joke.

If you want to see an intelligent critique of the Left, try Allan Bloom's "Closing of the American Mind". The OP should go to college or spend some time at a library or buy some text books with statistical data and carefully designed arguments.

Please Turn the radio off. Stop reading propaganda created by political organizations.

The 1960s were nothing if not eventful. There were assassinations, murders, the Viet Nam War, protest marches, sit-ins, freedom rides, campus takeovers, church bombings, boycotts, riots, teargas, campus shootings, cross burnings, draft card burnings, bra burnings, and cities burning. There was a cause for every young idealist who was a solution looking for a problem. The 60s were heady days for young people just coming of age and cutting their political teeth. Those young and often ill-informed idealists of the 60s have since become grouchy old white liberals, reenergized by the election of America’s first black president—something that surprised them even more than it did Barack Obama’s most ardent opponents.

One of the reasons these crusty old white liberals are so nostalgic for the 60s is that they yearn for the days when they still had the moral high ground—when they could self-righteously blame every social problem on racism and not be too far wrong. Unfortunately for them and America, what today’s white liberals fail to acknowledge is that this is 2012 not 1968. Black Americans can vote, eat in any restaurant, drink out of any water foundation, hold any job, attend any school, win elections in the deepest of the deep-South states, ride any bus or even own the bus company, and become President of the United States. One would think that white liberals who marched alongside Dr. King in the 60s would rejoice in the progress America has made, but this is not the case. One can only wonder from their rhetoric if they would not really be happier if racial segregation was still the order of the day.
