Vote-counting scanners used in Ohio’s most populous county since 2008 are defective and sometimes miss votes, the United States Election Assistance Commission said after a 20-month investigation. The agency began the investigation in Cuyahoga County after an April 2010 article in The Plain Dealer reported that 1 in 10 machines failed certification tests required by federal law. The findings were released this week. Jane Platten, the director of the county elections board, told the newspaper on Thursday that the scanners’ counts for all elections were accurate and that the board had created safeguards to work around problems. The manufacturer, Election Systems and Software of Omaha, Neb., said it was cooperating in the review. The elections board spent $12 million on scanners to replace a $21 million touch-screen system that crashed twice during the 2007 general election.

Use paper then, we have used that in every election in New Zealand without fail. No need for expensive voting machines that fail just like all other technological devices. But of course having paper makes it harder to cheat, as you can test voting papers for DNA and fingerprints, not to mention have humans there to monitor the voting so no one cheats in the first place.

Issue a national voter ID to every American free of charge and I'm right there with you for an ID requirement.

Again it's a number game not the offense....
