I don't think anyone has denied that Roland was portrayed as being white in the books, both the art and the writing. Doesn't Eddie at some point say that Roland looks like Clint Eastwood? But it's not actually important to the story. Roland being black won't make anything different other than Roland's skin color. It might be an issue if they'd included Susannah, particularly her Odetta persona, because there was actually a racial element involved in the early dynamic between the three characters; Odetta's problems with white people make her dislike Eddie and Roland. Since Eddie and Susannah both appear to have been removed, even that small bit of racial importance is gone. Stephen King has said he doesn't care about what race Roland is.

There are plenty of reasons this movie may suck. I don't think Idris Elba being cast as Roland is one of them.
