The United States has blocked attempts by its Middle East allies to fly heavy weapons directly to the Kurds fighting Islamic State jihadists in Iraq, The Telegraph has learnt.

Some of America’s closest allies say President Barack Obama and other Western leaders, including David Cameron, are failing to show strategic leadership over the world’s gravest security crisis for decades.

They now say they are willing to “go it alone” in supplying heavy weapons to the Kurds, even if means defying the Iraqi authorities and their American backers, who demand all weapons be channelled through Baghdad.

High level officials from Gulf and other states have told this newspaper that all attempts to persuade Mr Obama of the need to arm the Kurds directly as part of more vigorous plans to take on Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) have failed. The Senate voted down one attempt by supporters of the Kurdish cause last month.

The officials say they are looking at new ways to take the fight to Isil without seeking US approval.

Okay, here's the thing...

IN 1914, we thought Monarchy was bad, bad, bad. so we insisted on toppling the Hohenzollerns, Hapsburgs and Ottomans. Because Monarchy was bad. It got replaced with Fascism and Communism, which was worse.

Then we saw that Communism was bad, so we turned a blind eye to what the Fascists were doing. Let them scoop up Austria, Czechoslovakia, Albania, Manchuria, Ethiopia without a peep, because at least they were stopping those damned Commies. Until they turned on the west, anyway.

Then we decided Communism wasn't so bad, and we essentially saved Stalin because he was the only one in a position to really defeat the Axis. (Yeah, I know you think your ancestor who fought at D-Day or Guadacanal did it, but get real, the USSR did all the heavy lifting in WWII.) Then lo and behold, we defeated fascism, but we spent the next 40 years being scared of the mean old Commies again.

So in addition to propping up a lot of tinpot dictators that made America truly hated - The Shah, Somoza, Marcos, etc - we decided to arm a few guys who were going to keep them commies in line. Like Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

And when the USSR fell for reasons that had nothing to do with that, we patted ourselves on the back and said we won the Cold War, and then wondered why the guys we backed were turning on us.

But don't worry. We got new buddies called the Kurds. They won't ever, ever turn on us, even though a lot of people who HAVE been our allies are saying we shouldn't trust them.

Then In Iraq you have defeated the rightwing nutjob argument. Iraqi Kurds are not interested in a military offensive into Sunni cities and provinces where daesh terrorist scum have seized control. They have their buffer zone protecting the territory in Iraq they wish to control. They fight the Islamic state when the terrorists attack Kurdush areas or when there is a looming threat nearby.

We need the Sunnis to turn against the demons that are terrorizing them. Focusing on Kurdish forces to liberate Mosul and Tiktit is s waste of time.
