How do you feel about the New Yorker cover showing Barack Obama as a muslim and his wife as a terrorist?

We have a thread on this.

Any reasonable person knows it is satire making fun of the right-wingers who think Obama is a closet Muslim in bed with terrorists.

It's a caricature - ergo what Steerpike has posted makes complete sense. If it was a right wing rag it would have been a photoshopped front page intended to inflame it's right wing readers. That's the difference.

Personally, I think it's a pretty accurate depiction of what the Obamas are. No, I don't think he's a Muslim, but a radical piece of shit? Definitely.

That's why the New Yorker is making fun of those who believe Obama is a radical. Apparently you have to read the story to find out that Obama isn't just not a radical, he's a raging conformist who will alter himself for whatever situation he finds himself in. Not so much a radical as a conformist chameleon. But that isn't a useful message to the GOP which wants to frighten the average punter by linking him with radical Islam and radical anything else.

It is stupid and irresponsible because many people will not go beyond looking at the cover, and come away thinking the New Yorker thinks Obama is a Muslim and his wife a gun toting terrorist.

It's just crude if you ask me, and I don't even like Obama, and like his wife even less :)

No, it's sin - if there is one - is that the satire is too fine. In an age when we're used to satire being delivered like a sabre blow, the tingling prick of the point of the épée isn't felt any longer.

One thing it demonstrates though, the dumbing-down is almost complete.

Almost? Where you been? They crucified a guy a few years ago cause he used the word niggerdly , claimed he was a racist. And just the other day we had another one of our intelligent respectful black leaders claim that the term " black hole" was a racist term. With Obama we have Liberals screaming racist if anyone even asks him a question. And they have already proclaimed if he loses in November it is cause we are a Racist Nation. We have moonbats demanding we apologize for something we fought a blood war to end over 143 years ago. And others demanding payment for acts back then to people that have never been slaves , payment from people that have never been slave owners.

Before Bush was elected the Democrats were screaming bloody murder that social security was going bankrupt and the Republican Congress was to blame, Once he was elected and made proposals to solve what the Dems said existed they all started claiming Social Security was fine, absolutely secure and in no danger at all.

Then we have the fact that for 12 YEARS the Democrats in the White House, Executive Branch and Congress all insisted Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, supported terrorists and was a direct threat to this country. Bush acts on that and suddenly he made it all up and is a liar.

Liberals in this country have taught everyone they are victims and never responsible for any actions they take. There is always someone else to blame. They have convinced large segments of our society that the Government should provide for them from cradle to grave. We have generations of families that have done JUST that.

It's contagious. Do you recall the incident in the UK a couple of years ago when a doctor's house was attacked by a mob. Dumb bastards couldn't work out the difference between paediatrician and paedophile!

Oh and here? Quite a number of years ago all public notes and safety warnings and the like that related to inflammable objects, equipment, clothing etc, had to be changed so that the sign/label read "flammable". Apparently our collective genius had decided that "inflammable" (as in "inflame") somehow meant "unflammable" (a non-word of course but apparently if it were known in Australian-English would have meant "non-inflammable").

"It's okay, we can get these jammies for the kids, they're 'inflammable' that means we can let them sit near the heater....."

True story.

Sorry for the thread drift, sometimes I can't help myself.

That's unbelievable.

What's ironic is that RGS is using the word liberal incorrectly and proving your point.

One word: Ratings

Even bad news is better than no news in media. Attention sells.

Astute, abiet somewhat cynical, observation, Mattskramer

But, one of the things I have learned through hard experience is that often the cynics are right.

I think people are forgetting that it is the media's role in society to be thought-producing.

I read a pretty funny piece on this that suggested the New Yorker should have wrapped the magazine in brown paper as if it was porn so the poor dears that are sensitive to mockery wouldn't have to see it.

I suspect the Obama campaign will be okay with this in the longer term, if not then they have lost touch with both reality and the strategy of campaigning. It's pulling out some really interesting ideas. I wonder how Fox will spin this?

Providing fresh chum for the media feeding frenzy, the cover is double trouble for Obama’s image sensitive campaign.

Coming less than a week after Obama’s remarks on bilingualism set blogs and message boards ablaze with charges of elitism and shame of his fellow countrymen, the cover has thrust a favorite of the cultural and political elites into the heart of an ongoing debate over politics and class in America. Viewed in conjunction with Obama’s bilingual statement and his remarks earlier in the year to a San Francisco fundraiser regarding the bitterness of Middle American voters, it supports the impression that Obama is the champion of an elite class that views working class and evangelical Americans with disdain and condescension.

Furthermore, it fuels the fears of the 10 percent of registered voters that believe Obama is in fact a Muslim.

In a recent poll conducted by the Pew Center for the People and the Press, 79 percent of respondents said they had heard rumors of Obama’s purported Muslim faith. While those without a college degree outpace those with a degree by 15 percent to 5 percent believing those rumors, belief is relatively equal along racial lines with 10 percent of blacks and 11 percent of whites acknowledging believing them.

With 14 percent of Republicans, 10 percent of Democrats and 8 percent of Independents stating they believe the junior Senator from Illinois is a Muslim, the campaign is highly defensive in the face of anything that might reinforce the fear that Obama is a modern Muslim Manchurian candidate.

Clearly the issues of classism and faith remain to be addressed by the Obama camp, particularly in light of recent polls placing the presidential race in a virtual dead heat. With these lingering issues dogging the presumptive Democratic nominee, one wonders how much effort it will take Republicans to derail a candidacy that repeatedly shoots itself in the foot and is haunted by deep seeded misperceptions.

Where is Elayne Benes to decipher a cartoon from The New Yorker when we need her?

It will be fine so long as they also do:

In no particular order:

The editor in lalaland smoking pot windows fogged as brain is
Italians in the mafia garb eating hoagies and pizza
McCain in a wheelchair, dribble on mouth, wife bandaged from last plastic surgery
Jews ruling the world with piles of money all around, fiendish smiles
Irish drunk and bruised and incoherent
Rednecks with 15 year old wives and three children
Blacks in Cadillacs cashing welfare checks
Illegals cutting the grass of new yorker editor writing about illegal immigrants
Priests fondling small boys while reciting the our father
Muslims with bombs and pictures of 72 virgins dancing in their heads
Episcopal minsters fonding each other
Republicans in bathroom stalls as octopus, hands and feet everywhere
Fundamentalists preachers buying 1000$ suits from the collection plate money as 800 numbers for prayer appear
Creationist looking in mirror as monkey behind scratches his head
Congressmen taking money from lobbyist
Lobbyists giving money to congressmen
Americans really really really fat eating fastfood watching Fox cheering on the loonies in 24
Bush slurring 'you can fool...', while Cheney shoots him, Rove counterfitting in the corner

sure I missed many, add your favorites.
