A smart play by Obama that will hopefully allow us to work with Russia to start squeezing Iran. You would think that it would go without saying that we wouldn't use Nukes at first provocation. However, after eight years of the Cowboy In Chief, it now has to be an official statement.

The protests by the Cons are utterly lame on this. I was listening to our local conservative talker, a classic Bush apologist, do her best to whine about this. Of course, she is a dim bulb so it came out as mush.

Of course, after eight years of a dismal national security record, you'd expect the party of "national security" to grasp at straws.

I agree the end game in all of this was to get this treaty resolved with Russia so that they can start to get involved in ensuring a nuclear free Iran. Looks like behind the scenes negotiations with both China and Russia are underway.

Of course, the right will claim that negotiating is for pussies and point to how effective the Bush "AXIS od EVIL" threats were in preventing Iran from seeking nuclear weapons

Why is the GOP now turning on the dream of their greatest "hero" Reagan?

I guess it's because the GOP has now been taken over by the tea party.

Not only is this a similar plan to Reagan's START initiative, but it is almost exactly the same, just an extension really.

So much so that people are now referring to Reagan's treaty as START I and to this treaty as START II.

It's rather pathetic to watch the right scramble on this. I think it was a smart move (and basically redundant).

We don't need to tell Russia and China that we aren't going to first strike them anymore than they need to tell us they aren't going to hit us with biochemical weapons. It's all just icing to open up some dialogue.

I'd argue that nuclear weapons have prevented more killing than any other single factor during the 20th century. They are the reason World War II was the last world war.

Remember his 500 ship Navy? Did more to fuck things up than anything, because we lowered our standards WAY down for enlistment standards.

Then, consider that afterwards, we ended up with too many ships and not enough sailors. I saw ships that had to deploy at only 85 percent manning, which sucks for the crew.

Good point. And he's not getting rid of them completely, so the deterrent is still there.

But, he's also not planning to maintain the ones we keep. So, what good is a nuke if it's left to deteriate? No new technology...no maintenance...just stick 'em in a bunker and hope and pray we never need them.

Why was it different when Reagan did it?

Two reasons. Reagan didn't and Reagan didn't do it right.

First you have to achieve parity. That means you drop the whole notion that because Russia is one country they should be entitled to have enough missiles to balance all of the west.

Russia gets the exact same number of nukes as the US. Nothing happens until that goal is reached first.

Then you reduce the number of nukes to the minimum needed to maintain the MAD model.

Then you go out together and work very hard to keep radical regimes like Iran from getting a working nuke of their own.

No other treaty makes any sense at all. It has to benefit the United States or all bets are off.
