Obama's Labor Secretary: Illegal Aliens Have a ‘Right to a Legal Wage’

I would like to believe that Jarhead, but these employers don't expect to be caught. That is why they feel its okay to use them to begin with.

yes...but this new directive gives the undocumented immigrants reason to approach the DoL...and you couple that with the procedurral memo of a few weeks ago in regard to NOT deporting those that are not criminals....those undocumented immigrants that are receiving lower than legal wages will have no fear of reporting their employers...

And the employers, knowing this, will either have to pay them more and therefore likely terminate them and hire legal citizens.

I see this whole thing as this administrations way of bypassing congress to actually GET SOMETHING DONE.

Look, as I said, I am not an Obama fan....but congress has been a waste of tax payers money as of late. They act in such a partisan way, nothing is getting done.

I really think Obama has found the secret to getting stuff done around the house....

The fact is that we HAVE an illegal problem precisely BECAUSE employers take advantage of their willingness to work for less than prevailing/legal wages.

End THAT practice and the illegals will leave this country under their own power.

I am not so convinced of that Save Liberty. The procedural memo of 2 weeks ago pretty much made it clear that if you are undocumented, and you are not a criminal, you will not be deported.

Then you add in yesterday...if you are undocumented, and you are not being paid a fair wage, you have the right to a fair wage so approach us and let us know.

Now when you put those two together...this is what you get....

If you are undocumented but working in the US, you have the right to nothing less than minimum wage and access to all benefits all other non exempt workers at your place of employment get. Therefore, if you are getting anything less, and you do not have a criminal background, feel free to approach us. We will force your employer to increase your wage and compensation package, and you will not be deported.

Ingenious if you ask me.

Empoloyers will fear being reported...they will have to pay as much as they would pay a citizen...so they will release all undocumented workers...and hire citizens...and the undocumented workers will have no place to work...and the border issue will be minimized....not to mention a decrease in the unemployment numbers as citizens will get the open positions.....

And at the same time....

It looks as if Obama is HELPING the undocumented workers...increasing his voter base amongst the latino community ...while also appearing to be appeasing his far left.

It won't work IF there is no ENFORCEMENT of it.

IF the fines that the companies pay are smaller than the benefits they'd made by paying less?

Then guess what?

Companies will continue to take the risk and write off the fines as the cost of doing business. (just as they have been doing all along!)

Make the consequence of breaking these ALREADY EXISTING LAWS, harsh enough and then these laws will not be broken.

Well...I look at what he has done and I had to question why...

His procedural memo of 2 weeks ago was just way "out there".....I had a feeling it was a prelude for something more....I mean...the man wnats to get re-elected...why would he turn off his independent base by sending out a memo that the GOP will spin as "his way to grant amnesty without goiung through congress"...I mean.....I am a conservative and I dont moind admitting that the GOP was going to truly spin that as much as they could.....so I knew he had something up his sleeve..

And then this comes out yesterday.......so when you put it together it seems to make sense.

Claudette....tyhink about it.....undocumneted immigrants were just told that if they are clean, they have the right to all that a co-worker that is documented gets...and believe me...there is a great differecne in those compensation packages....they will jump on it..

But not so fast....the employers are going to fire them before they get to jump on it.

I not only think that this is going to work...I think it will work so quickly, that there will be a dramatic drop in unemployment...especially in the rural areas...in a matter of weeks.

There will also be a sharp increase in the cost of produce and other items that are prodcued by companies that are top heavy with undicumented immigrants.

Yes...I see this working on all levels...including increasing his support from two bases he was losing...the far left and the latino community.

We have a tough hill to climb come 2012...we need our best candidate to run....this whole immigration thing may be a game changer.

I would add a requirement that proof of legal presence be required before money may be wired offshore. This would eliminate much of the attraction of coming here illegally.

The agreement protects both legal and illegal workers. Solis said the agreements are aimed at educating migrant workers, regardless of how they got here, about their rights under U.S. law and to help prevent them from being abused in the workplace, either through wages, loss of job, or deportation. It may come as a surprise but illegals do have rights.

I seriously doubt that the agreement grants any additional rights.

Slap the businesses with heavy fines, possible jail time for the owners, and possible suspension of business licenses for a myriad of time frames.....Two months per illegal hired, or whatnot.
