If you've been paying attention to Barack Obama's campaign for re-election you may have noticed a recurring theme. While he hits the campaign trail, flashing his million-dollar smile and waving to the adoring crowds, his political hit men are engaged in one of the dirtiest campaigns in recent American history — a campaign where decency is no virtue and moral atrocities are no vice. Not if they help Barack Obama win re-election.

First it was Harry Reid's indecent act on the floor of the U.S. Senate about Mitt Romney not paying taxes in 10 years — an allegation made without so much as a scintilla of evidence to back it up.

It's one thing if a drunk in a bar makes some crazy, unsubstantiated accusation. But this was the leader of the U.S. Senate telling the American people "The word's out he (Mitt Romney) hasn't paid any taxes in 10 years. Let him prove he has paid taxes. Because he hasn't."

When asked how he knows this, Reid said he got the tip from a confidential source who had worked at Bain Capital. When asked who it was, Reid wouldn't say. And if a reporter asked Reid, how a confidential source — assuming one even existed — could possibly know anything about Mitt Romney's personal income-tax returns, I missed it.

Decent people protested Reid's low blow. But the president of the United States wasn't among the decent people. He could have denounced Reid's slimy tactic. But he didn't say a word. And that makes him complicit.

And when the president's friends were asked what they thought, they simply changed the subject to Romney's taxes. The president's press spokesman, Jay Carney, said this was a matter between Harry Reid and Mitt Romney.

Except that no one believes that Harry Reid was freelancing, that he woke up one day and said I think I'll go on the floor of the Senate and say that Romney hasn't paid taxes in 10 years. "The word's out" that the president's re-election team was pulling the strings of their willing puppet.

At the time I thought this was as low as it would get during this campaign. But then came The Ad, produced and paid for by Priorities USA, a super-Pac supporting Barack Obama — and run by a former spokesman for the president.

The ad — casually and incredibly — linked Mitt Romney to the death of a woman who had cancer.

In the video, 62-year-old Joe Soptic looks right into the camera and says that Bain Capital shut down the Missouri steel mill where he had been working. He lost his job, his insurance . . . and his wife died.

The implication is clear: If Romney hadn't shut down the plant his wife might still be alive today. This is not simply nonsense. It's despicable.

First, Mr. Soptic had been offered a buyout; he wasn't simply told one day that he was fired. That's not in the ad.

Second, his wife was working and had insurance with her job when her husband lost his. That's not in the ad, either.

Third, Mitt Romney left Bain in 1999, the plant closed in 2001, the woman was diagnosed with cancer in 2006 — when Romney was in his fourth year as governor of Massachusetts. None of that is in the ad.

So how is Mitt Romney even vaguely responsible for this woman's death?

It is the dirtiest political commercial I have seen in a very long time. But again the president remained silent.

And again, his silence makes him complicit in this moral outrage.

This is rich.

The article points out that "Obama" is running one of the dirtiest campaigns and sites Reid and a SuperPac ad.

Neither of which are under Obama's control.

In any case..Romney's called Obama a failure, says Obama wants to attack religion and make the country more secular, has taken credit for rescuing the auto industry, attacks Obama for following a reverend he disassociated himself from 4 years ago and has told boldfaced lies on several occasions.

And Obama is dirty?

When Romney releases his tax forms, and they show he paid taxes every year, then you can call the accusation dirty politics. Until then, the refusal to release those returns is confirmation of Reid's accusation.

Obama has no control?

He is the POTUS and leader of the democratic party for crissakes...........

It must be Bush's fault.

Obama surely doesn't seem to have any problem whatsoever with Romney being accused
of killing some lady.

You are a LIAR. When a Super Pac was going to run an Ad about Rev. Wright The White House spokesman claimed that it was dirty unethical and under handed and demanded Romney condemn it. Romney has less contact with that Super Pac then Obama has with the one running the Death ad.

What happened? Romney denounced the Ad and it never ran. Obama has done absolutely NOTHING about the death ad. No private conversation and most assuredly no public condemnation, request for it to stop. No comment AT ALL. Add to that the same White House Spokesman that demanded Romney denounce a Super Pac ad says President Obama has no control what so ever over this ad.

You are a LIAR. Obama is a LIAR. The White House Spokesman is a LIAR. Par for the course. What one always expects from liberals is lies and half truths.

Amazing, the man accused by everyone running against him in the primaries of being dirty and unfair is supposedly running a clean campaign. Did romney come to the OP's house and shake her like an etch-a-sketch until she forgot everything bad about him, or was she just too fucking stupid to remember it in the first place?

2 things

1. saying something that is actually negative about a candidate is not bad, it is what the people need to know. yes, that is part of the political process. You do not just ignore every dumb ass thing a person does because it is negative. The idea of not running a negative campaign is not using pointless insults. Like if Obama ran an add that called Romney a stupid jerk that would be inappropriate and negative in a bad way. Obama running an add that shows Romney's policies that some may interpret as making him a stupid jerk is simply giving the public the information on the opponent they need. The same goes in reverse for romney.

2. If you are going to be mad at one side for doing it then get mad at both sides. Every time Mittens mentions Obama something negative follows. It is to be expected, and if it actually bothered you then you would hate mittens too.

The numbers don't lie.
says Obama wants to attack religion and make the country more secular,
Which he has done with his attempts to make institutions of faith compromise their beliefs over birth control and his public announcement that America is not a Christian nation while talking shit about the sound of the morning Muzzy prayers being the most beautiful blah, blah, blah.
... attacks Obama for following a reverend he disassociated himself from 4 years ago
After trusting said race baiting, anti-American reverend for his own spiritual growth as well as that of his family for 20 years and after word got out about the indoctrination going on in Wright's "church".
and has told boldfaced lies on several occasions.
And this is a bad thing in an Obama supporter's book?

nah its not, but cute attempt at claiming it is such...

Every election cycle you people try this...

Reagan did this. When he destroyed the Fairness in Media Doctrine in the early 80's, he set the table with a new standard of political "speech" by selling fairness to the corporate right wing. Water carriers like Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, etc. now basically own the AM talk radio band, and they jumped quickly aboard when that disease moved to cable "news" networks.

Since then, politics have become a form of marketable entertainment in the American media marketplace. FOX and the talk radio pundits now compete for ratings and cash; they do so by being even more outrageous and controversial than ever. Every day, they try and go beyond where they went the day before. Politics in America have left intelletual debate behind in favor of "your team, my team" partisanship.

We have become a nation of adolescent idiots. Thanks, Ronald Reagan! You have destroyed our country . . . all so that you could pursue personal fame.
