The viewship for Obama's State of the Union speech was down 12% from last year. He took a big hit in the 18-49 year old range. A repeat of Sunday night’s special edition of American Idol drew 9.6 million viewers and the best rating of the night — a 3.4 — among the 18- to 49-year-old viewers favored by most advertisers.

Obama is in trouble. Lowest viewed of any of his State of the Unions, and an election year that has to hurt. To make matters even worse for Obama, even though Newt Gingrich is old, a career politician and insider, has more baggage than JFK International Airport...in the latest Gallip Poll, Gingrich only trails Obama by 2 points.

I am one post short of being able to use links, so here is the article on Obama's lowest viewership yet for any of his State of the Union speeches.

From deadline.com

About 37.75 million viewers watched President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union address, which featured a farewell appearance by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and aired live across 14 broadcast and cable networks. That was down 12% from last year’s speech, which was watched by 42.79 million people and down 21% from Obama’s first State of the Union in 2010 (48 million). Like his approval ratings, Obama’s TV ratings have been sliding since the post-inauguration high of 52.37 million viewers who tuned in for his address to the joint session of Congress in February 2009. Among the cable news networks, Fox News dominated the field with 3.8 million viewers vs. 2.8 million for MSNBC and 2.7 million for CNN.

The State of the Union address Tuesday night was seen by 37.8 million television viewers, according to figures released by the Nielsen company, by far the fewest who have watched President Obama give the address.

The number was down from 42.8 million last year, 48 million in 2010, and 52.3 million for the president’s address to Congress during his first year in office in 2009.

NBC News had the most viewers of any of the outlets carrying the speech — 8.2 million. Next was CBS, with 7.3 million for the duration of the speech, and ABC with 6.6 million. A total of 14 networks carried the speech.

Among the cable news networks, Fox News was on top with 3.8 million viewers. Notably, CNN finished third and last among the cable networks for the first time in coverage of a State of the Union. MSNBC beat CNN with 2.82 million viewers to 2.67 million for CNN.

Another positive performer on the night was “American Idol” on the Fox broadcast network. A repeat of Sunday night’s special edition of the show drew 9.6 million viewers and the best rating of the night — a 3.4 — among the 18- to 49-year-old viewers favored by most advertisers.

It's easy to lose viewers when you recycle the same speech year after year and your actual record stinks like a turd....Obama is not the "blank canvas" he was in the 2008 campaign. Reality is his enemy. Hope and change anyone?

I'm amused that anyone would think the viewship numbers for a State of the Union speech are somehow significant.

It's the STATE OF THE UNION....a major snooze fest for most of us even if you have Madonna give it.
