President Barack Obama “would object” to the annihilation of the Republican Party, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Thursday. His comments came two days after Republican House Speaker John Boehner charged that doing away with the GOP would be one of the Democrat’s top second-term priorities.

“I think he would object,” Carney insisted. “He believes that the two-party system is part of the foundation of our democracy and that it is a healthy aspect of our democracy even if it’s contentious.”

“The president believes that a strong two-party system is the foundation of our democracy and looks forward to working with Republicans as well as Democrats and get things done,” Carney added.

Face it. The GOP is so badly splintered that it may never recover for many years. At this point there is no current GOP politician that the entire party could ever rally behind for POTUS.

they will just have to dump the te party base to GET ANYWHERE in the future

Of course he would. Who would be left to blame?

The two party system is not what the founders envisioned as completely functional. The shortcomings of a two party system lead to complete dysfunction....as we see now.

Of course he objects, with no GOP he "and the democrat party" have noone to blame for their failures.

Becuase the republican party gave up in believing in facts

Our government was designed to be "dysfunctional" when there was a lack of consensus. This worked fairly well for the first 200 years, but the New Democratic Party has figured a way around it: Pass bills which illegally impose increased future expenditures, and then pass "continuing resolutions" instead of Constitutionally mandated budgets in order to stifle debate. Do you think this perversion can last forever?

Of course not. Dysfunctional within the context of govt passing burdensome laws against its citizens, not responsible and unaccountable.

Bullshit! Our would be tyrant would like nothing better!
Nothing but platitudes and pablum for the unwitting masses, this dictator wannabe would, like Adolph Hitler, delight in spending hours watching and rewatching the executions of his enemies.

Not that I believe Obama when he says it, but that is the way we should all feel. 1 party isn't Democracy, it's the USSR.
