Obama: ‘We need more revenue’ (a.k.a. tax increases)

President Obama kicked off the final news conference of his first term by renewing his call for Congress to approve a “balanced” deficit-reduction package that includes both spending cuts and new revenues.

Republican leaders have said repeatedly that the Jan. 1 fiscal cliff agreement ended any discussion of raising new revenue and that in upcoming negotiations they would deal only in spending cuts. Obama made clear that he does not agree.

He reiterated that he is “open to making modest adjustments to programs like Medicare.”

“The fact is, though, we can’t finish the job of deficit reduction through spending cuts alone,” Obama added. “We need more revenue.”

[Snip]

“The debt ceiling is not a question of authorizing more spending,” Obama said. “Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize more spending. it simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already agreed to.”

"The curious may want to know why the Bush tax cuts are set to expire in the first place. After all, if then-President George W. Bush and Congress thought they were a good idea when they passed them in the early 2000s, why make them temporary?

The answer is that President Bush and a complicit Congress didn’t want to show the magnitude of the deficits that would result from their tax cuts. To hide those deficits as they were pushing them through they used a variety of accounting tricks. One of those tricks was attaching expiration dates so that, on paper, there wouldn’t be any long-term costs. This made the long-term deficit picture look fairly rosy on paper even as it doomed Bush’s successor and the current Congress to cleaning up the mess."

Congress will more than likely pass a Bill cutting spending, Harry Reid and his Merry Democrats will block any attempts to cut spending. The Seante will counter with a tax hike Bill that will hit the middle class and claim it's the Republicans doing it.
You know what they say about fools? There's one born every minute and the Dems in their race to Marxism use these fools daily. You can tell by the posts on the messageboards.
