Reports now circulating that the relationship between Afghanistan commander General McChyrstal and President Obama is becoming increasingly strained as Obama angered over McChrystal's plain talk on what is needed to win in Afghanistan...

Barack Obama furious at General Stanley McChrystal speech on Afghanistan

The relationship between President Barack Obama and the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan has been put under severe strain by Gen Stanley McChrystal's comments on strategy for the war.

According to sources close to the administration, Gen McChrystal shocked and angered presidential advisers with the bluntness of a speech given in London last week.

The next day he was summoned to an awkward 25-minute face-to-face meeting on board Air Force One on the tarmac in Copenhagen, where the president had arrived to tout Chicago's unsuccessful Olympic bid.

Gen James Jones, the national security adviser, yesterday did little to allay the impression the meeting had been awkward....

In London, Gen McChrystal, who heads the 68,000 US troops in Afghanistan as well as the 100,000 Nato forces, flatly rejected proposals to switch to a strategy more reliant on drone missile strikes and special forces operations against al-Qaeda.

He told the Institute of International and Strategic Studies that the formula, which is favoured by Vice-President Joe Biden, would lead to "Chaos-istan".

Relations between the general and the White House began to sour when his report, which painted a grim picture of the allied mission in Afghanistan, was leaked. White House aides have since briefed against the general's recommendations.

The general has responded with a series of candid interviews as well as the speech. He told Newsweek he was firmly against half measures in Afghanistan: "You can't hope to contain the fire by letting just half the building burn."

As a divide opened up between the military and the White House, senior military figures began criticising the White House for failing to tackle the issue more quickly.

They made no secret of their view that without the vast ground force recommended by Gen McChrystal, the Afghan mission could end in failure and a return to power of the Taliban.

"They want to make sure people know what they asked for if things go wrong," said Lawrence Korb, a former assistant secretary of defence.

Critics also pointed out that before their Copenhagen encounter Mr Obama had only met Gen McChrystal once since his appointment in June.

McChrystal was out of line. Anyone who understands the military knows this and why. Nothing to see here.

I agree - nothing half-assed. Full ass based on what the military says it needs for a military operation or no ass.

But, get off your ass and decide.

Maybe we should have been concerned with obama's lack of voting on items during his senate career. Voting "Present" doesn't cut it when it comes to my friends, family, and fellow citizens on the ground Mr President.

Make a decision, pull out or do what the General is asking for.

Agreed - Obama is uncertain in a leadership role. One cannot campaign during war - one must lead.

To this point he has been a near-complete failure.

McChrystal is among the most revered and respected battle-tested leaders in the US Military.

And now let us watch the liberal statists start to turn against him.

    Utterly predictable...

Oh my God, will you please STFU! Millions of Americans let Bush allow us to wallow in Iraq for HOW MANY years? Not to mention, allowed Bush to send a bullshit force into Afghanistan with NO clear direction or goal, and yet you have been hammering away on Obama since the moment he took office. Your hypocrisy infuriates me and it's disgusting to use our military men and women as pawns inyour silly little politcal hack games.

Yes the Obama-Rum Mainstream Media should be starting their Smear Campaign against this General any day now. This General exposed their Hopey Changey's incompetence so he must be a "Traitor" no? This honorable man will either be removed or viciously smeared in the coming weeks. Probably both in the end.

They do so at their own peril - Americans are protective of our servicemen and women.

You are right though - the smear campaign is underway...

War is no game. GWB has under-resourced Afghanistan - no argument there. But for BHO to continue this? No. That's unacceptable. He needs to either resource it or pull out. He promised to pay attention to Afghanistan and he sits on his ass making no decision whatsoever. He has had the recommendation since before Labor Day. Inexcusable in so many ways.
