He benefited from growing Nixon fatigue and a very long-in-the-tooth Republican candidate (and some strong union support) when Biden initially won his Senate seat in the early 70's. When his wife and child were killed in the auto accident, his handlers spun the situation well and gained significant political points for Biden - a situation that continues to this day. (I am not diminishing the tragedy - but Biden himself has utilized the aftermath of those deaths repeatedly in every subsequent political campaign...)

He has since ran for president a number of times and it was at that time the national press corp discovered just how poorly Biden did as a student - and just how willing Biden was to ramble on about his favorite subject - Joe Biden. Biden's grades both in high school and in college were consistently below average. His time in college appears to have only been sustained due to it keeping him out of Vietnam. By the late 1980s he had become something of a joke among reporters and even his own Democrat colleagues.

His selection as VP by Obama remains a mystery, as does the even greater mystery of his ever-growing hairline...

Biden ran for president twice, not "a number of times." Ironically, he happens to be, gasp, one of those citizen politicians all you righties clamour is what Washington needs. All the time he has been in the Senate, he has commuted from Washington ON A DAILY BASIS to his home in Delaware where his family, including his mother-in-law, live.

If you people weren't so fucking obsessed with demonizing everything the Democrats do these days, you would know that Biden's credentials are actually superior to Obama's as far as experience. It's just too damned bad that you choose to cherry-pick everything when presenting your opinions as if minor negatives should outweigh successes (not just of Biden, but everything you touch) and be the determining factor of someone's career and persona.

And nobody but you losers give a sweet shit about his HAIR. One can only imagine how some of YOU really look in person when you're so quick with criticisms about someone else's. If you had just shut up about Biden's HAIR, then I wouldn't have conjured up this image of YOU (if you get my gist):

Biden's resume plays like a liberal version of Al Bundy satire.

In 2008, he requested 116 Congressional earmarks, while also pushing for social security benefits for illegal aliens. Biden received over $5 million from lawyers and lobbyists since 2003. (His own son Hunter is a DC lobbyist) He voted against the Persian Guld War in 1991, but voted for the Iraq War resolution in 2002.

In an interview Biden described an incident where his helicopter was forced down by Afghan terrorists. Actually, the helicopters landed to wait out a snow flurry, and then proceeded, safely, once the storm passed.

When Biden ran for President in 1988, a reporter questioned his intelligence. Biden responded angrily in defense of his academic record, and in doing so, layered lie upon lie. He stated he graduated in the top half of his class - he did not. He stated he graduated with three degrees - he did not. When a follow-up story charged Biden with plagiarism on a college paper, Biden quickly withdrew from contention.

Biden considered another presidential run in 2004 but chose not to - while also urging John Kerry to pick John McCain as his VP pick.

In 2008, Biden was once again running for President, but after a dismal 1% showing in the Iowa Caucus, he withdrew - later firmly indicating he had no interest in accepting the role of Vice President.

When Obama later introduced Biden as his VP pick, he introduced his fellow Senator as "the next president." Not to be outdone in the gaffe department, Biden then called his would-be boss, "Barack America."

Biden's role in the Obama White House remains uncertain. Despite his seeming lack of clear duties, he remains a treasure-trove of gaffe material, most recently indicating panic over the great Swine Flu pandemic of 2009, as well as proudly indicating in public the whereabouts of the until-then, secret Vice Presidential bunker.
