Obama To Say US Facing New Sputnik Moment - CBS News :clap2:

(AP) WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says the country is facing another Sputnik moment.

In his State of the Union address tonight, Obama will remind Americans of a time 50 years ago when the Soviets beat the U.S. into space by launching its Sputnik satellite.

Obama says that America didn't just roar back and surpass the Soviets but that the U.S. unleashed a wave of innovation that created industries and millions of jobs after boosting spending on research and education.

Saying that now is this generation's Sputnik moment, Obama will call for new investments in education, research and innovation.

The White House released excerpts of Obama's speech in advance.

He could have done this 2 years ago.

There was to much inclusion of Republican ideas into the stimulus. While I am glad Obama's found his "footing"...if he had put more into infrastructure and alot less into tax cuts/breaks..things would be very different.

why yes, nothing is to much inclusion......

more infrastructure, you mean more paying the salaries of more state employees....and 'invest' won't work either.....:eusa_hand:

sputnik?

he'll have to explain to 75% of the country that Sputnik is not Russian diarrhea or a rapper...

You're clapping for this?

So we aren't investing in education, research, and innovation already?

This is ridiculous. Our problem isnt that we aren't spending enough money. It's that we are spending way too much and extremely inefficiently.

Also, spending money on education doesnt make children smarter.

What is it about the energy issue that causes lefties to become catatonic? It ain't about satelites or education or research. It's about cheap energy.

Comparing the pursuit of alternative energy sources comes no where close to the same thing as a sputnik moment in the minds of the public. Never will.

I mean, technically he is correct in terms of new technological possibilities and new industry development that could occur from it. But it comes no where near capturing the public's imagination and focusing their collective willpower upon achieving this goal as sputnik did. It's a gross overstatement in the name of hyperbole.

We are quite a bit more jaded now than in the time of sputnik.
Takes a lot more to impress us hence hyperbole.
Or a superbole.

Well, to be fair everyone has looked at the heavens at night and wondered whats up there. It captured the imaginations in a romantic way.

Not quite the same as looking at your gas tank and wondering what else you can put in there.

Okay, so let's make spending habits more efficient. Investing in education, and equipping people with the qualifications to earn meaningful jobs and a solid wage, not to mention be better able to contribute to the tax base, is a more efficient expenditure than paying welfare benefits out to those same people over the next 10 to 20 years, or longer, isn't it?

I do agree, spending money doesn't make children smarter. But saving money doesn't make smart kids reach their full potential either.

Most, like 90% of jobs people get after college are have no meaning... "Education" is a magic word to make liberals pucker up and feel better and smarter than everyone that does not agree with them.

Understand that many High school drops outs do more meaningfull work than many college educated people... seriously, try and understand that very basic concept.

Tax parents higher if their children make poor grades?
give parents some incentive to help their children do better in school.
A D average or lower and you get 1/4 of your income tax deduction for that child.
a C average you get 1/2 of your income tax deduction for your child.
A B average you get 100% of your income tax deduction.
A A average and you get 125% of the normal income tax deduction.

Many, or even some. But not most.

Sputnik was a "government program". One we matched.

Meaningful, in terms of earning ability.

The stimulus was half of what it should have been and the limit was determined by Republicans. The stimulus package was about 40% tax cuts..which were Republican ideas. After they got everything they wanted..they didn't vote on it.

So it did half of what it should of done..and took twice as long.

And Republicans could and do..disown the whole thing.

Big mistake all around.
