Obama to Force Kids to Serve the Community

They can make it a requirement of graduation. You must clock so many hours of community service to obtain a diploma.

according to the NYTimes in 1994 it was already becoming mandatory

Its just another sad attempt by Cons to convince themselves that Obama is a socialist, with dreams of authoritarian control and world domination.

Local school boards decide what graduation requirements are. The feds have zero power to require graduation requirements.

Don't like the requirements? Hate kids being "forced" to take physical education? Elect a new school board, move to a different district, or home school your kid. Its as simple as that.

That's what we have now. What Obama is proposing is mandatory community service for all students in all schools.

If your school board doesn't want a federal grant to promote public service education, they can turn it down. It won't kill them. No one's forcing them to take it. Many states are turning down NCLB money, so they don't have to implement Bush's standards. . They get 99.99% of their funding from local property taxes.

The fed holds the promise of money over the heads of public schools like a sledge hammer just like it does with highway funds and any other federally funded program. And if you want to force kids to do anything, they'd get a hell of a lot more out of an hour of PT everyday than they would volunteering.

It is already required at some schools as you said. Besides, colleges love to see it on your resume/transcript.

You know what else colleges like to see on an app.? the fact that a kid worked and showed some maturity in handling school and a job.

It's a great idea-----get students to do the work for free so no one needs to hire ayone to do the job. Who needs jobs?

What do you think internships are for? If the kids do a decent enough job, they could get hired to do it full time.
