WASHINGTON -- In a reversal of a long-standing ban on most offshore drilling, President Barack Obama is allowing oil drilling 50 miles off Virginia's shorelines. At the same time, he is rejecting some new drilling sites that had been planned in Alaska.

Can someone explain how this is a "win" for Obama?

The oil companies who lease the land will put any found oil on the Open Market, which means we will have to compete for it. Prices will not go down.

If Obama "mandates" the oil be used in the US, then Republicans will "SCREAM" that Obama is taking over the oil industry.

Where is the "win"?

An encouraging development. We'll see where this actually goes, in time.

Obama could be softening lawmakers and voters to accepting his proposed budget, which strips tens of billions of dollars from the domestic petroleum industry by recinding long-standing tax rules.

I'm leary of his motives to say the least.

It's hard to say where this oil would be shipped. It would make sense to refine it here in the U.S. rather than send it half way across the world. But that may very well happen.

While there is an Open Market in crude contracts, local markets withing the U.S. vary with respect to prices. Oil produced and sold in Illinois for example is priced at $8.00 less than NYMEX. In some western states, that "spread" had been as high as $15/bbl.

When Prudhoe Bay came on line, the intent was to send the oil to California but that state sued claiming (rightfully so) that it would destroy local crude markets by driving down spot prices. The result is that much Alaskan oil is exported.

Why this fixation on driving down oil prices? For cheap gasoline and heating oil? We saw the results of $8 oil and $1 gasoline- the domestic petroleum industry was decimated.

The "win" is producing American oil and natural gas and reducing what we need to import from other countries, creating jobs in the U.S. and keeping our petro dollars within our own borders.

Wow this guy is screwing everyone. I said all along that this guy was George Bush on Steroids. He has done all the same things him and his fellow Democrats viciously condemned the other party for doing the previous eight years. Now drilling is suddenly a good thing. Huh whaa? These same kooks couldn't stop whining about that the previous eight years. This is just like them quietly reauthorizing the Patriot Act and Raising the Debt Limit. I also said all along that there were no real differences between this guy and John McCain during the election. This guy hasn't done anything different than John McCain would have done himself. The possible exception to this would be his massive Health Care debacle. McCain would have passed something but probably not as massive. We didn't have a real choice in the last election. This only proves that. I just don't see any difference between a Neocon/Progressive and a Socialist/Progressive. Where did all the real Conservatives go?
