Obama the dictator at it again< Signs worse bill then Sopa and Pipa

the dear leader the left put into power is power hungry !!!! and he is buying campaign endorsements from the media and hollywood !!! he is scum.....

Opposition to SOPA was bipartisan. By putting it on the back burner, Obama dodged a giant bullet.

But this sounds like more than a bullet. It could be the defining moment in his last term in office.

Under the provisions of ACTA, copyright holders will be granted sweeping direct powers to demand ISPs remove material from the Internet on a whim. Whereas ISPs normally are only forced to remove content after a court order, all legal oversight will be abolished, a precedent that will apply globally, rendering the treaty worse in its potential scope for abuse than SOPA or PIPA.

Sounds much like SOPA.

BAd law unless you happen to be holding a lot of copyrighted content you want to protect.

You can thank Disney Corp for these assaults on the public domain, I'll wager.

When it comes to copyright laws this legal trend to give more and more longer and longer copyright protection has been happening for about twenty years.

When the consitution was signed copyright protect was 15 years.

Today copyright protection is either 70 years after the death of the creator, or if a coporation owns the copyright, it's 90 years after the original copyright was issued.

Sonny Bono, former singer songwriter and former Nevada Rep, was the sponsor for the above changes to the copyright laws, incidently. That happened around 96.

His law came on line just in time to save DISNEY's copyrighted protection on MICKEY MOUSE.

SOPA or PIPA on the surface looks like it's about copyright's protect. But once you get past the surface there's more to it than that. Do people want the government being able to control the vehicle for information? If it had not been for the internet no one would have heard about some of the bills being voted on in congress.

Now as for this treaty, it doesn't matter how many obama sign as long as they are not approved by congress they are meaningless. If we had SOPA or PIPA as laws then we would never have heard about this treaty, and if we don't hear about it it could very well become law of the land.

He can sign all the treaties he wants. Unless he gets senate confirmation it has all the force of a piece of used kleenex.

Getting it through the senate after all the yelling over Sopa and pipa will be a severe problem.

Apparently you and many more here did not actually read the article. The agreement itself is not really the scary part:
The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement was signed by Obama on October 1 2011, yet is currently the subject of a White House petition demanding Senators be forced to ratify the treaty. The White House has circumvented the necessity to have the treaty confirmed by lawmakers by presenting it an as “executive agreement,”
The propensity for this administration to simply ignore the constitution is amazing. Then there is the fact that China is one of the countries that signed on and has takedown rights! Why the hell should we allow China to do anything that protects their copyrights when they absolutely refuse to recognize ours?

Spot on.

Basically this gives those with influence the power to shut down websites at will and places the website owners without recourse to legal protection.

Oh I suppose one can go to court, but we all know that most websites can't afford to do that.

So basically this gives de facto censoring rights to those whose word has influence.

Free speech?

Not hardly.

Only BIG CAPITAL will have that right.
